General Qualifications:
- Must be eligible for Federal Work-Study through the Financial Aid Office.
- Must be enrolled at Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen status.
- Successful completion of a background check.
Preferred (not required) Skills:
Returning military-affiliated student. Administrative or customer service experience. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Critical thinker with strong organizational and multitasking abilities. Familiarity with the needs of military-affiliated students.
Requested Work Schedule:
Note: Regardless of work schedule below, students may never work during their scheduled classtimes.

Purpose or Role of the Position within the Organization:
This position offers students an opportunity to work in an environment that supports military-affiliated students, including veterans, active duty, reservists, and dependents.
Duties/Responsibilities of the position and how they relate to the purpose or role:
The Military Student Center (MSC) at VWCC provides a one-stop support hub for military-affiliated students. Services include assistance with admissions, financial aid, advising, academic support, veterans’ benefits, and referrals to campus and community resources. The MSC’s mission is to foster a supportive environment that contributes to student success and engagement. Students working within the MSC should be able to:
- Answer and make phone calls, take messages, and route calls appropriately.
- Provide high-quality customer service to visitors and direct them to the appropriate campus resources (Advising, Financial Aid, Tutoring, etc.).
- Assist students with completing and submitting required forms to utilize military educational benefits for schooling unique to each student.
- Support students with understanding general financial aid and veterans’ educational benefits processes.
- Maintain paper and electronic filing systems.
- Distribute materials regarding VWCC programs, resources, and events.
- Operate and maintain office equipment such as printers, desktops, and phones.
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and professional yet welcoming environment for visitors and students.
- Assist with club activities associated with the Armed Forces Student Association and the VWCC chapter of the Student Veterans of America organization.
- Explain details about the SALUTE national honor society and collect membership applications and dues from eligible Veteran students for admission.
- Understand and comply with all rules regarding FERPA to respect privacy of student information.
- Learn about and promote awareness of the unique aspects of military culture to help create a safe and welcoming environment for transitioning service members and their families.
- Perform additional clerical and administrative tasks as needed.
