Emergency Medical Services - Paramedic (Associate of Applied Science)

Joint Venture with CVCC

Programs & Training at Virginia Western > Healthcare > Emergency Medical Services – Paramedic > Joint Venture with CVCC

Central Virginia Community College delivers the Associate of Applied Science Degree Paramedic on their home campus as well as at Virginia Western via distance learning. The first Joint Venture class at Virginia Western will begin in Fall 2026. Students are admitted annually.

The program is designed to produce competent entry-level Paramedics who can service the community with advanced life support care via the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) infrastructure. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible for National Registry testing and certification in Virginia.  Employment opportunities for Paramedics are available with Ambulance, Fire and Rescue services, Hospitals, Government Departments, Sales and Humanitarian relief organizations.

How does the distance program operate?

The Joint Venture program is a distance satellite of the CVCC accredited Paramedic program. Students enroll in the same classes and have clinical experiences identical to students on the CVCC campus.

The Paramedic classroom environment consists of various modalities. Courses originate from the main campus at CVCC and are delivered through Canvas, collaborate, and in the classroom. The CVCC lecture is delivered live to the other classroom site by HyFlex format; students can see and talk to the classroom instructor and to students at the CVCC site.

Preclinical, clinic, and laboratory courses will take place at Virginia Western’s Greenfield Education & Training Center in Botetourt County.  Virginia Western Joint Venture students will attend clinicals in Roanoke and the surrounding area.  Students may complete general support courses in the curriculum (English Composition, Humanities elective, Developmental Psychology) at Virginia Western.

How do Virginia Western students communicate with CVCC faculty who teach distance courses?

Students can talk with the instructor during class sessions using compressed video. In addition, weekly conference time will be provided for students at the joint venture site as office hours for faculty-student communication. Students will have individual email accounts. Other communication can be done by phone or fax. A Clinical Coordinator will be employed by Virginia Western and will assist the Joint Venture Paramedic students at the Virginia Western campus.

How can I learn more about the student experience at the joint venture site?

For CVCC specific information, you may visit the CVCC Emergency Medical Services website.

For specific questions about the distance classroom and clinical experiences of the students at the Joint Venture site, you may contact Adam Amburgey (aamburgey@virginiawestern.edu).
