What Is Reverse Transfer?
Reverse transfer allows students who have transferred from Virginia Western Community College to a participating four-year institution to use credits earned at the university toward an associate degree or certificate from Virginia Western.
It’s a great way to receive a credential for the work you’ve already completed — even as you continue working toward your bachelor’s degree.
How It Works
- You transfer to a participating four-year college or university. After leaving Virginia Western, you continue earning credits at your new institution.
- Your credits are evaluated. Once you’ve earned the equivalent of 60 or more transferable college credits, your four-year school may share your transcript with us (with your permission).
- We review your record. We will review your completed coursework to determine whether you’ve met the remaining degree requirements for an associate degree or certificate.
- You receive your degree! If eligible, you’ll be awarded your associate degree or certificate — a valuable credential that recognizes your achievement.
Why Participate?
- Earn a credential you’ve already worked for. Many students complete most or all associate degree or certificate requirements before transferring. Reverse transfer lets you make it official.
- Strengthen your résumé. Employers recognize the associate degree or certificate as a sign of persistence and accomplishment.
- Increase your educational security. Even if you don’t complete your bachelor’s degree right away, your associate degree or certificate remains a permanent, recognized qualification.
Who Is Eligible
You may be eligible if:
- You previously attended Virginia Western.
- You earned at least 25% of the required credits in your academic plan here before transferring.
- You have earned additional credits at a participating four-year institution.
- You have not yet been awarded an associate degree from Virginia Western.
How to Get Started
- Grant permission. Sign the reverse transfer consent form through your four-year institution. This form is likely available through your university’s registrar’s office.
- We’ll do the rest. Your transcript will be reviewed, and we’ll let you know if you qualify for an associate degree or certificate.
Virginia Western is excited to offer this impactful service to our students to help you achieve your educational and career goals – and recognize and celebrate each milestone along the way!
