Administrative Officer for Nursing Programs

Position Number: FA239
Reports to: Dean of Health Professions (FA186)

Under the supervision of the Dean of Health Professions, the Nursing Program Officer will be responsible for overall leadership, development, direction, and administration of all aspects of the nursing program, for ensuring that the program is in compliance with all laws and regulations of the Virginia Board of Nursing, and for coordinating the nursing curriculum with other degree program requirements.

Work Tasks & Duties

Program Supervision & Management (60%)

Program Supervision and Management (e.g. budget, policies, procedures, curriculum development, program evaluation, etc.)

  • Maintain knowledge and currency regarding the program and the policies and procedures by which it is administered.
  • Responsible for developing and documenting policies and procedures, planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating all aspects of the program.
  • With faculty input and in collaboration with the Dean of Health Professions, develops and documents program policies and procedures. Monitors implementation of policies and procedures to ensure consistency and effectiveness. Re-examines and modifies as necessary.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors department budget; pursues other funding sources such as grants.
  • Attends meetings for VCCS Nursing programs and VBON meetings, and other assigned meetings as the department representative.
  • Ensures ongoing program evaluation; takes appropriate action to resolve problems or nonconformance items.

Accreditation Management & Compliance

  • Compliance with Board of Nursing rules and regulations to include applicable external organizations.
  • Communicates, reports, and interprets program requirements, objectives, and VA Board of Nursing (VBON) requirements to administration and other departments.
  • Collects and organizes data necessary for accreditation. Submits annual reports and coordinates development of self-study required for continued Board of Registered Nursing Approval.

Student Management (e.g. clinical rotations, assignments, handbook, monitors performance, maintains records)

  • Plan, manage and evaluate program admissions, recruitment, advanced placement, and outreach.
  • Maintains student records and monitors overall student performance.
  • Maintains and updates ADN Student Handbook assuring accurate and up-to-date content of program policies and procedures. Ensures consistency between Student Handbook, course syllabi, and VBON regulations.

Personnel Management (e.g. PT interviewing, hiring, assists with credentialing, FT orientation and mentoring, committees, meeting chair, etc.)

  • Supervise and manage the part-time administrative assistant. Monitor and approve time worked, evaluate performance and provide direction and guidance. Ensure duties best support the program and tasks are completed accurately and timely.
  • Maintains an approved part-time clinical faculty list. In collaboration with the Dean, interviews and selects part-time clinical instructors and classroom adjunct faculty. Ensures that all recommended candidates meet VBON and ACEN credentialing standards.
  • Screens and recommends candidates for faculty appointments, assuring that all nursing faculty meet the VBON Requirements for nursing and submits faculty appointments, resignations, leaves, and other forms to the VBON.
  • Coordinates and oversees orientation and mentoring of new faculty.
  • Coordinates all departmental faculty committees and nursing advisory committees.
  • Chairs Associate Degree Nursing faculty meetings.

Clinical Management (e.g. contracts, visits, ect.)

  • Oversees Clinical Coordinator in the coordination, development, and approval of student assignments to clinical group/rotations.
  • Assists with identification and contract negotiation for use of clinical facilities; assures that contracts comply with Board of Nursing regulations; and maintains file of current contracts.
  • Makes periodic visits to clinical facilities.

Curriculum Development, Evaluation and Revisions (20%)

  • Curriculum development and implementation, including coordination with curriculum committee and collaboration with the Virginia Community College System as needed.
  • Develops, evaluates and revises curriculum to ensure that program standards meet VCCS. ACEN accreditation, VBON and College guidelines. Prepares documentation for curriculum reports and catalog changes.

Teaching and Advising (15%)

  • Teaches 8-12 contact hours per year.
  • Holds defined office hours.
  • Advises students and participates in advising initiatives (i.e., Navigate, SAILS, etc.).

Community Relations (5%)

  • Interacts with health care professionals to maintain good community relations.

  • Prolonged and frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping.
  • Moderate to heavy usage of hands in grasping, repetitive hand movement and finger coordination in keeping records and preparing reports using a computer keyboard.
  • Speech and hearing to communicate effectively in group settings and by telephone to students, faculty, staff, and others.
