Are you looking to refresh and expand your bioscience knowledge? Would you like to polish and enhance your proficiencies in essential laboratory skills and methods such as documentation, solution preparation, DNA extraction, PCR, cell culture, protein purification, SDS-PAGE, western blotting, and more? Do you have an interest in gaining hands-on experience with common laboratory equipment like micropipettes, thermocyclers, biosafety cabinets, electrophoresis systems, imaging equipment, and microscopes, to list a few? The Biotechnology Career Studies Certificate (CSC) at Virginia Western Community College can help you achieve these goals.

This program can be added to another degree, such as an A.S. in Science, a bachelor’s degree, or a Medical Laboratory Technician program, to strengthen your career readiness. Near the end of the program, students are eligible to sit for the Biotechnology Aptitude and Competency Exam (BACE), an industry-recognized credential for technician-level positions in biotechnology, life sciences, healthcare, and related fields. Graduates are prepared for a variety of career paths, including roles as Research Technicians, Environmental Health and Safety Technicians, or Forensic Scientists. They are also well-prepared to transfer to one of the many four-year institution in Virginia to continue their studies and gain research experience. Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to credit-level coursework established by the college. Applicants must currently be enrolled in the AS Science, AAS Medical Laboratory Technology, or related program at Virginia Western or have completed a degree in a similar field. Applicants must have a cumulative high school or college-level GPA of 2.0. College GPA is based on at least 12 credit hours of college credit in a 12-month time frame. The GPA is determined at the end of the fall semester prior to admission.
