Dr. Laura J. Treanor pledges to “create possibility” as Virginia Western’s fifth president

Dr. Laura J. Treanor was inaugurated as Virginia Western Community College’s fifth president in an investiture ceremony at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke on Friday, September 25, at 10 a.m.

“Virginia Western is in very good hands,” said Dr. Beth A. Quinn, Chair of the Local Advisory Board, who presided.

Dr. Treanor has served as College president since July 1, 2025. In her inaugural address, Dr. Treanor shared a framework for the College to embrace innovation and offer opportunity for a student population with a wide range of backgrounds, ages, and unique challenges to overcome. “Each of us is entrusted with something that can create possibility for someone else,” she said. “And I have come to believe that leadership, at its very best, is the stewardship of that opportunity.” Continue Reading Dr. Laura J. Virginia Western redesigns Information Systems Technology specialization to respond to AI impact and forge new pathway to Radford University bachelor’s degree 

Virginia Western has revolutionized a two-year programming degree into the Associate of Applied Science in IST: Data Analytics & Programming Solutions degree. This unique pathway was built in tandem with Radford University to create a true “two-plus-two” program, enabling students to receive Radford’s Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Systems in four total years. Additionally, Radford’s program has an opportunity to continue with a one-year option for a Master of Business Administration, which is offered online. Virginia Workforce Association recognizes healthcare partnership

Virginia Western Community College celebrates an award-winning healthcare program in the Roanoke Valley.

The Virginia Workforce Association has named Carilion Clinic’s Grow-Our-Own Medical Assistant-Certified (MA-C) Program as recipient of the Talent Champion Award. Virginia Western and the Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board collaborate with Carilion Clinic to operate the program.

Virginia Community Colleges set tuition & fees for 2026-27 academic year

The State Board for Virginia’s Community Colleges voted May 21 to set tuition and mandatory educational and general (E&G) fees for the academic year that begins with the Fall 2026 semester. For in-state students, tuition and mandatory E&G fees will increase $6.70 per credit hour. Virginia Western adds 1,041 new alumni

For the 2025-2026 annual year, which runs summer 2025, fall 2025 and spring 2026, Virginia Western welcomed 1,041 people to its growing alumni network. These students earned a total of 1,304 awards.* 

More than 400 graduates attended Virginia Western’s 60th commencement, held Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Berglund Center in Roanoke. The ceremony honored graduates who completed their degrees and certificates during fall 2025 and spring 2026, as well as students projected to complete during the summer 2026. Virginia Western will celebrate Commencement on May 15

Virginia Western celebrates recognition with Military Friendly Gold Status

The Military Friendly Survey has awarded Virginia Western Community College a designation of Gold Status for 2026-27 following College-wide efforts to support military-affiliated students.

The Military Friendly organization assesses educational institutions on benchmarks including graduation, retention, job placement or transfer rates; loan default rates; and veteran outcomes as well as outcomes for Guard and Reserve students, dependents, active duty, and military spouses.
