Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Training

Programs & Training at Virginia Western > Logistics & Transportation > Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Training

Ready to shift your future into high gear? Launch your career in one of America’s most essential and high-demand industries with a training program engineered for maximum safety, flexibility, and real-world results.

As a registered FMCSA Training Provider and DMV-licensed tractor-trailer school, our CDL program delivers federally compliant, safety-driven entry-level driver training (ELDT) built on industry best practices. Virginia Western Community College partners with Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) to deliver this comprehensive program, designed specifically for working adults making a career change.

Our flexible training options range from 30 days to 6 months, allowing you to choose the pace that works best for your schedule and goals.

Program Structure

Step 1: Orientation & Classroom Instruction (8 hours, in-person)

A full-day session covering program orientation, vehicle inspection demonstrations, and cargo management best practices.

Step 2: Online ELDT Theory (32 hours, self-paced)

Complete state-approved online modules within 45 days (minimum 80% score required). Topics include basic operation, safe operating procedures, vehicle systems, and non-driving activities.

Step 3: Testing & Licensing

Pass your state knowledge tests to obtain your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). MGCC offers on-campus CLP testing to streamline this process.

Step 4: Behind-the-Wheel Training & Range Exercises (80 hours)

Once you have your CLP, you will begin intensive hands-on instruction with certified MGCC instructors. This 80-hour component includes:

  • Comprehensive Instruction: Hands-on training in vehicle inspections, basic control maneuvers on the range, and on-road driving.
  • Pre-testing & Observation (10 hours): Dedicated time for skills evaluations, pre-testing, and observing vehicle operations to ensure mastery.
  • Final Skills Examination (5 hours): Allocated time for your official state-administered final skills test using an MGCC vocational vehicle.

Flexible Scheduling

Training is available throughout the week to fit your busy life:

  • Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Saturday – Sunday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Prerequisites & Essential Functions

Before registration, students must meet the following criteria and be able to perform these essential functions:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • License: Hold a valid driver’s license (minimum 60 days).
  • Medical & Physical Standards: Pass a DOT physical examination (approx. $100). Key requirements include:

    • Hearing: Must pass a “Forced Whisper” test (the ability to hear a quiet whisper from 5 feet away).
  • Screening: Pass a DOT drug & alcohol screening (approx. $60). Results take 3-5 business days, so please complete this early.
