One Drive
Important! OneDrive data is not backed up by an enterprise system like network storage. Microsoft maintains version backups, but the recovery point objectives in One Drive are much shorter than on premise storage.
In most cases. files stored in OneDrive are retained for up to 93 days, but 30 days is a better measurement. Versioning and other options for older file recovery are not equivalent to the features in the enterprise backup systems in place for network storage locations. If the files are important, copy them to the network!
Data stored in OneDrive may be synchronized to the devices uploading files, however, this practice can create problems with local storage and impact the overall bandwidth of the college Internet connection. As mentioned previously, enabling synchronization of One Drive is not recommended.
Virtual machines with access to on-premise network storage are available from off campus. This is the recommended practice for working on data remotely.
Best practice is to create documents on network storage and copy to OneDrive as needed for mobile access. The convenience of OneDrive is beneficial, but the backup caveats and limitations in synchronization create some significant pitfalls to fully embracing this service.
Google Drive
Data stored on this platform may be downloaded and synchronized. Using the platform is allowed, but the application needed and synchronization capabilities create the same caveats as OneDrive.
