Network Storage
Network storage is provided to system users by Information and Educational Technologies to ensure sufficient storage resources are available for all work-related needs. Data stored in the Virginia Western on premise private cloud is protected from loss by enterprise backup systems to ensure proper recovery time and recovery point objectives. Network data is backed up regularly and redundantly, available for restoration to multiple points in time.
Storage Management
High speed, high-availability storage systems carry a significant cost of ownership and must be managed properly. Efficient and careful allocation of resources is cost beneficial and requisite to the college mission. Central storage management is a balance between providing a safe solution to hold essential work-related data and becoming a repository for large amounts of rarely, if ever, accessed information.
Users are tasked with management of storage allocated for their use. Guidelines for use are prescribed in this document.
Space Available
- Each system user is initially allocated 10GB of limited network I: drive space and unlimited U: (utility) drive space upon initial account creation.
- Data that is personally sensitive or explicit in nature to include videos, pictures, tax documents and other information that may include sensitive data must not be copied to network storage.
- Periodic internal audits of storage use may be performed to ensure compliance with guidelines. Data repositories are scanned for sensitive content and PII Personally Identifiable Information. If data is observed outside guidelines for appropriate network storage use, the data owner will be notified and compliance actions must be taken promptly.
Compression – Do Not Use!
Compression of data on the network drives is not supported or needed. Users are asked not to turn on compression. Turning compression on will not technically harm the system, but it will slow access time. If more space is needed, submit a Team Dynamix ticket.
