Cloud storage is a service that saves digital data on remote servers managed by a third-party provider, allowing you to access files from any internet-connected device rather than on a local hard drive. This off-site model is managed by the cloud provider, who is responsible for the hardware’s security, maintenance, and accessibility, making it a scalable and cost-effective alternative to on-premises storage.
Microsoft OneDrive Standard
Microsoft OneDrive is the is the college standard for cloud storage. OneDrive offers convenient access to data on the Microsoft Cloud.
- Each user is initially allocated 20GB of storage space on OneDrive. More space will be allocated upon request pending review of the storage space in use and justification of need.
- Sensitive data may be stored on OneDrive. External sensitive data sharing from One Drive is blocked by data leakage policy (DLP).
- This storage solution can be configured to synchronize back to local storage space. When synchronization is implemented, it may create issues with storage quotas or fill up drives. Use of OneDrive synchronization is not recommended.
Google Drive
VCCS provides Google Drive. Sensitive data shall not be shared on Google drive!
Other Cloud Storage
Use of other cloud storage platforms for college data is not approved. Management of data on these platforms does not meet requirements for cloud storage standards. iCloud, Sky Drive, Drop Box are all examples of this type of storage. Sensitive data should never be placed on these platforms.
