Virginia Western measures student success as “students who, by the following fall, had graduated from Virginia Western, transferred to a four-year institution prior to graduation, or were still enrolled at Virginia Western.”

1. Program-Placed Students

Goal/Target: 68% of curricular (program-placed) students will have a “successful status” the following fall.

Threshold of Acceptability: 65% of curricular (program-placed) students will have a “successful status” the following fall.

Conclusion: In 2020-21, 70% of program-placed students had a successful status the next year. This meets the goal of 68%.


2. Dual Enrollment Students

Goal/Target: 78% of dual enrollment students will have a “successful status” the following fall.

Threshold of Acceptability: 75% of dual enrollment students will have a “successful status” the following fall.

Conclusion: In 2020-21, 81% of dual-enrolled students had a successful status the next year. This meets the goal of 78%.


3. Non-Program Placed Students

Goal/Target: 87% of credits taken by non-program placed students will be successfully completed with a grade of A, B, C, P, or S.

Threshold of Acceptability: 85% of credits taken by non-program placed students will be successfully completed with a grade of A, B, C, P, or S.

Conclusion: In 2021-22, 84% of credits taken by non-program placed students were successfully completed. This is the first year since 2017-18 that the goal was not met.

Action Plan: Our Academic Success team, which is a part of Virginia Western’s Shared Governance structure, is in the process of implementing an action plan that develops a culture of care in which students can access student support resources in one centralized location, including advising, tutoring, and other academic and non-academic resources.
