VWCC:Institutional EffectivenessMission and Purpose
The Institutional Effectiveness Office (IEO) works with administration, faculty, staff, and students to promote the mission, vision, and core values of the college. The department is responsible for coordinating student assessment, strategic planning, accreditation activities, program reviews, and institutional research. Through these efforts, the department engages in data-driven evaluation and planning that will provide an environment conducive to learning; quality instruction; comprehensive transfer degree programs; innovative degree, certificate, and workforce development programs; and a broad range of student support services for our students and our community. This includes
- Monitoring the college’s planning schedule and the development of annual IE plans;
- Providing assistance to college divisions for planning, assessment and improvement;
- Assisting in SACS accreditation processes;
- Serving as IPEDS key-holder and college data coordinator;
- Assisting faculty and staff in collecting and organizing data for assessment of teaching and learning;
- Coordinating student assessment activities;
- Compiling and publishing various documents and reports.
The reports include, but are not limited to, the VWCC Fact Book, the Institutional Effectiveness website and intranet site, program reviews, progress reports on college goals and college-wide accomplishments, results of annual accountability performance measures and standards, information for the President’s annual report, and College surveys to meet accountability requirements.
goals and responsibilities
- Conduct Institutional Effectiveness standing committee meetings during the academic year to monitor the annual planning, implementation, evaluation, and improvement cycle.
- Create, administer, and evaluate student assessments to provide the college, community, and various agencies with value-added metrics regarding student success and retention.
- Through the IE web site, provide current and historical information concerning institutional effectiveness, including the college's planning cycle, college and service area demographics, student achievement, and student assessment results.
- Coordinate program review process to ensure that the college continues to offer innovative, high-quality programs, courses and instruction.
- Work with high schools, two-year colleges, and four-year institutions in the college's region to provide information on student enrollment, transfers, and achievements.
- Meet regularly with various constituents to identify and evaluate data that demonstrates the ways in which the college fulfills its mission.

Institutional Effectiveness (IE): Definition
- Institutional effectiveness is the systematic, explicit, and documented process of measuring performance against mission in all aspects of an institution. (SACS-Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Ehancement, p9)
- A continuous, cyclical process that is participative, flexible, relevant, and responsive. The approach to institutional effectiveness includes all program, services, and constituencies and is strongly linked to the decision-making process at all levels, including the institution's budget process.
