Free Salsa Dance Classes – VW Latin Movements Club

The Virginia Western Latin Movements club is starting the free salsa lessons again this semester.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome! No experience or partner necessary!

DMV 2 Go

Can't get to the DMV? The DMV is coming here!

The DMV mobile unit will be in parking lot 1 in front of the Natural Science Center on Thursday, September 19th, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The wireless office on wheels offers all DMV services:

  • Apply for or renew your ID card - children and adults.
  • Apply for or renew your driver's license - take road and knowledge tests; get your picture taken, reinstate driving privileges.
  • Get a copy of your driving record.
  • Obtain vehicle titles, license plates, decals, transcripts.
  • Order disabled parking placards or plates.
  • Recently moved? Stop in to upgrade your address on your DMV record. At the same time you can update your voter registration address and organ donor status.
  • And much more!

2013-14 College Committee Schedules

The Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 College Committee Schedules are now available.

The schedule and committee memberships are available on the Governance page on VWConnect. We are still in the final stages of updating committee membership information.

Information and Educational Technologies (IET) has also created a calendar file which can be imported directly to your Outlook calendar.

The Outlook calendar update file has been added to H:\Calendar Date Files with the names of "VWCC Fall 2013 Committee Meeting Schedule" and "VWCC Spring 2014 Committee Meeting Schedule".

Follow the directions located at http://virginiawestern.edu/iet/helpdesk/howtos.php under Import a Calendar Date File into Outlook to learn how to update your primary Outlook calendar with these files. You will notice that there are other calendar files you may import as well such as the timesheet due dates. Please do not import a calendar update file that you have already imported before.

Updated Virginia Terrorism and Security Awareness Training

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) recently released the 2013 edition of the VDEM - Terrorism and Security Awareness Orientation, an online course available via the Knowledge Center.  This course is designed to fulfill Governor’s Executive Order #41 (2011):  “…that all state employees shall complete the prescribed Terrorism and Security Awareness Orientation course within ninety days after commencing state service.”  This course will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. 

IMPORTANT:  If you have not yet completed an online Terrorism and Security Awareness training via the Knowledge Center since being hired at VWCC, please complete this course as soon as possible.  Instructions for accessing and completing the training are below. 

  1. Login to the VWCC Knowledge Center:  https://covkc.virginia.gov/vwcc
  2. Go to Learning Center >> Course Catalog
  3. Enter Keyword Terrorism in the Search Text box. Click Search.
  4. The following course will appear: VDEM-Terrorism and Security Awareness Orientation.  Click on the course link. 
  5. Click Enroll 
  6. Click Enroll one more time (Suggested:  Leave Course Credit Option as Credit and Course Mode Option as Normal.)
  7. Click Access Item
  8. Click on the link in the upper left of the screen to begin the course (i.e., 2 SET-SAO Part 1 2013 Revision v8 test)

If you do not recall whether you have previously completed an online Terrorism and Security Awareness training, you may check your transcript in the Knowledge Center by going to My Workspace, My Transcript.

Planned Outage: SIS/HR, Mobile SIS and the Online Admission Application

Information Technologies Services (ITS) in Richmond has scheduled an outage of SIS/HR, Mobile SIS and the Online Admission Application from 8 p.m. Saturday, September 14 until 10 a.m. Sunday, September 15.  Necessary maintenance will be performed on these systems during this time.

American Association of Community Colleges Plus 50 Encore Grant – Professional Development Workshops

Did you know...that VWCC is now a AACC Plus 50 College?
VWCC is part of a growing number of community colleges across the nation reaching out to Plus 50 Learners, a rapidly growing demographic that faces many challenges (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-eAamtDLaw). To learn how VWCC can become more 'user-friendly' to Plus 50 Learners and ensure their success in classes and with future career pathways - register for our September Professional Development Workshops for all faculty and staff.
Workshop sessions will be held on Wednesday 9/18/2013 and Thursday 9/19/2013 from 9:00am to 4:00pm in Whitman Auditorium. Workshop agenda includes:

  • § Creating Hybrid Courses for the Adult Learner
  • § Instructional Technology for the Adult Learner
  • § Panel Discussion on Advising Adult Learners; a Discussion Guide for Plus 50 Learners; Developing a Toolkit for Special Populations; and Best Practices for Plus 50 Learners
  • § Dr. Sheila Newberry from St. Petersburg College in Florida will share her experiences and expertise covering Characteristics of Plus 50 Learners; Adult Learning Theory for Plus 50 Learners; and Classroom Skills for plus 50 Learners.

Lunch will be provided for full day registered participants.
First Come basis so register early. Attend day 1 or 2. Should your schedule not permit attending all day you may attend the session that meets your need.
