What the heck is Lecture Capture?

Have you seen or heard of Lecture Capture?  Are the students or instructors around you talking about Panopto?  Do you wonder if all the chairs fall from the ceiling if you "flip the classroom"?  Are you wondering what the heck this is all about?

Well, you're in luck!   Head Media Geek B Bagby is here to answer your questions.   B will be presenting a short information sharing session about how lecture capture is being used here at VWCC as well as around the nation, in higher ed and K-12.  This is NOT a training session, but an informal discussion about the technology and pedagogy related to using video and audio recordings to augment learning.   Current users, as well as people that have never used the technology may all benefit from the information.

Monday, January 21 from 12:15pm to 12:45pm in W310.  No registration is required.  Feel free to bring your lunch with you.

If you have a specific question you'd like B to answer, please email bbagby@virginiawestern.edu by Sunday, January 20 and he'll do his best to address it in Monday's session.

2013 Stars vs. Staff Basketball Jam!!!!

The 2013 Virginia Western Stars vs. Staff Basketball Jam will be played Friday, April 12 at 5:00 PM in the Gymnasium.  This year will be playing to fight Type 1 Diabetes.  Any part-time or full-time faculty or staff member is eligible to play against our Blue Star student-athletes from volleyball, soccer, and basketball.

Worried about a one-sided game?  No worries, we are paying the refs and we are making the rules!

There will be fan contest for prizes, food for the players, and great experience for the Virginia Western family.  For those that wish to just come and watch, please spread the word so we can have a great turnout and get as many donations as possible.

Interested future winners, I mean participants, are to contact Nick Owens at nowens@virginiawestern.edu.  We will email as a group and decide on the best two dates to meet and practice before the game.  Have to crawl before we can walk (and not pull something)

A Semester of Service- February Service Projects

'A Semester of Service' will provide students the opportunity to serve their community through group involvement that builds relationships, expands the mind and enriches the spirit.

Each month the volunteer coordinator will coordinate one or two service project events, taking a small group of students to volunteer at the designated organization.  Service projects will typically be held on a weekday afternoon for one to three hours.  We will take a school vehicle and leave from campus.

February Service Projects:

After school programs provide a positive place for kids throughout Roanoke.  Make a difference in your community by Participating in after school programs.

Help a child read at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southwest Roanoke!

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

We will leave VWCC around 2:30 and return around 5:30.

Nursing home residents often look forward to scheduled activities including card games, crafts and musical performances.  When volunteers visit, the residents receive extra one-on-one attention which can be rewarding for everyone involved.
