These committees will take on the initiatives started by the Staff Senate Health, Wellness & Fun Committee as well as many more activities.

Plus 50 Pre-Conference Workshop on Engaging Adult Learners

The VWCC Plus 50 Initiative and the Academic Link are co-sponsoring a free pre-conference workshop on best practices for engaging adult learners. The workshop will be held on July 24, one day prior to the 2014 Instructional Technology Mini-Conference and will run from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. The workshop is open to all VWCC employees though faculty and tutors will find it especially relevant.

Entitled From Pedagogy to Andragogy: Best Practices for an Engaged Learner, the workshop will be presented by Melissa Maybury Lubin, Ph.D., the director of the Virginia Tech Richmond and Hampton Roads Centers. “Andragogy,” according to Dr. Lubin, is “. . . a flexible, enhanced, inclusive mode of learning that promotes a positive environment for learning for both children and adults.” In this workshop, Dr. Lubin, who earned her Ph.D. in Adult Learning and Human Resource Development at Virginia Tech, will draw on her experience and expertise in developing and engaging adult learners to help attendees understand how “the principles of andragogy [can] inform the practice of teaching in our interactions with adult learners.”

The workshop will provide a foundation and context for the mini-technology conference the following day, so if you’re planning to attend the mini-conference, please make plans to attend the workshop, as well. If you aren’t attending the mini-conference, please plan to attend the workshop anyway – particularly if you teach or tutor. You’ll be glad you did!

Adjunct and full-time faculty new to Blackboard

If you are new to Blackboard and would like to get a jump start on developing the basic structure of your course and learning how the main features work, this workshop is for you. We will do our best to answer all your questions and get you well on your way to developing your course in time for the fall term.

Topics will include:

  • Making course available to students and setting a course entry page
  • Adding course syllabus
  • Adding faculty contact information
  • Managing course menus or buttons
  • Customizing course settings and manage your screen displays
  • User management - includes getting your class roster in blackboard
  • Adding and modifying announcements
  • Adding course content (e.g. an assignment)

Intermediate Blackboard

Users who feel confident with Blackboard basics and want to expand their knowledge about using functions such as Grade Center and Testing/Assessment should consider this intermediate level workshop. The workshop will cover the topics listed below:

Topics will include:

  • Managing grades using grade center
  • Creating, modifying, and deploying a test with multiple question types
  • Clearing attempts and managing multiple attempts on assignments and tests
  • Options for using Respondus and lockdown browser for testing
  • Creating and modifying a discussion board forum
  • Adding/Replying to a Discussion Board Thread

The "We'll Take You There" business card design and associated fonts/font sizes is the only approved layout for Virginia Western business cards. The design was established through the IA Committee process and approved by the Executive Committee. Please do not request alternative designs, as Print Services will be unable to fulfill them. Any changes to the business card design/policy must go through the committee process.

Staff Senate Luncheon Update

Thank you to everyone who attended the Staff Senate Luncheon/Meeting yesterday. A special Thank You to those who been serving on the Health, Wellness, and FUN Committee consisting of Linda Hurt, Lorrie Danko, Amy Balzer, Valerie McKnight, Tara Nepper, Chris Johnson, Marla Whiteside, and Melissa Williams for putting together such a fun meeting.

Recap of the business items:

  • The Fitness Center will open August 21st and will be free to faculty and staff.
  • The new Student Life Center will have Subway on the third floor. Please remember to contact Subway, Dominos and Java the Hutt for catering needs.
  • During fall in-service there will be two special meetings, "Administrative Functions of the College" which will be for staff members. Please contact me if there are items you would like to see covered.
  • During the fall we hope to have bicycles for loan. More to come.
  • Additional fall activities include a chili cook-off/favorite team day, American Heart Association Walk, Diabetes Foundation Walk, Relay for Life team start up and more. Continue to check the Daily Bulletin for updates. (see today's Daily Bulletin post on the launch of two new committees to support college health and wellness)
  • Currently when a college employee retires funds are available in local funds to recognize the employee. College administration has raised the amount from $150 to $200. Contact Marla Whiteside for more information.
  • Participation in Staff Senate is approved by College administration. Both full and part-time employees designated as Classified Staff may participate and DO NOT need to use the time towards a lunch break.
