Last week the Media Geeks identified a problem with user recordings failing, without notifying the user. It would "look" like the recording completed successfully, but then the video would never finish posting on the server. While this problem was limited to specific users, with specific hardware, Panopto support recommended we update to the latest version to rectify this problem as well as address some other problems in the software. On Friday, January 24 we applied this update.
Unfortunately, while basic functionality has not changed, there have been some changes in the way the website looks. If you use the Panopto.VirginiaWestern.edu website, you will see that the icons for sharing, settings, etc. are no longer on the right of your screen. Instead, you will need to move your mouse over the video you want to work with. When you mouse over the title of the video, you will see all of the options appear under the title. Functionality of these options is still the same, only where they are located has changed.
For those using your personal computers, you may be prompted to update the Panopto software next time you record. You should do this, as it greatly improves the reliability of your recordings. The Media Geeks will be updating all of the Panopto recording software in the classrooms during Spring Break. Until then, classrooms should not be prompted to update automatically. If you do receive a prompt to update the Panopto client in the classroom, please call the Help Desk (77354) immediately and a Media Geek will come to your classroom as quickly as possible to assist you.
The eLearning and Instructional Technology staff is working on updating the Panopto user Guide. The new, updated document will be posted on the eLIT website shortly.
I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause. We work hard to limit our upgrades to times where little disruption can occur, but in this time of rapidly changing technology, sometimes a mid-semester upgrade is unavoidable. The deadline for registering for New Horizons 2014 at the early bird rate is February 19, 2014. The college will pay the early bird registration fee for any full-time faculty or staff who requested this on their Professional Development Application.

If you would like to post a Federal Work-Study (FWS) position for the Spring 2014 term, please submit personnel requisitions to Adam Bailey in the financial aid office as soon as possible. Paid Internships available with the Commonwealth STEM Industry Program (CSIIP) site offered through collaboration of Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Virginia's colleges & community colleges and many other partners. This is a free resource for finding paid internships through an online system for undergraduates in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) majors. One application puts a student in front of a multitude of companies with internships - no company applications to complete unless/until a company makes a student an offer.

- At least 18 years of age and attending an accredited Virginia college, community college, or university. Virginia residents attending an accredited out-of-state college may apply.
- Must be enrolled as undergraduate taking at least six (6) credit hours per semester and making demonstrated progress towards a STEM degree.
- Have completed at least 30 or more post-secondary education credits and are at least of rising sophomore status prior to the internship. Newly graduating seniors in 2014 are also eligible to participate.
- Majoring in a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) field.
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- A minimum GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.

Nominations are currently being accepted to fill the co-chair position left vacant by Rick Robers. The term for this position is through May 2015. Nominations may be presented from the floor on February 13th or submitted by email to Tara Nepper (firstname.lastname@example.org) at any time.
Regular elections for the other co-chair position held by Tara Nepper and the recorder position held by Nicole Bell will take place in May. Nominations for those positions will be accepted beginning in April.
