IDOL Instructional Design for Online Learning

The IDOL class is still available for your professional development goals for faculty evaluations.  The class will run no matter how many enroll.  Here is the description from the VCCS Course Catalog:

EDU 287 - Instructional Design for Online Learning

Prepares educators to design online courses that encourage active learning and student participation. Focuses on instructional design practices including the development of content tied to learning objectives and a peer-based approach to evaluating courses.
3 credits
To enroll in the class, you will need to get your educational coursework paperwork for taking a class at VWCC completed through Human Resources. Your books and tuition are free for this courses. The textbooks are already in the bookstore.  The course begins January 27 and is a 10 week course.  The course will allow you to meet your professional development goals in one semester.  It is a three credit course and not a certificate course.

TOTAL Blackboard Basics Workshop

The TOTAL Blackboard Basics Workshop that was to begin Monday, January 20, due to low registration has been cancelled. That said, NOVA will be running their TOTAL Implementing Open Educational Resources (OERs) workshop and our TOTAL Preparing Student Learning Objectives workshop scheduled to begin next Monday. Additionally we have a section of the TOTAL Blackboard Basics Workshop schedule to run March 17 - 30. NOVA invites you to participate in any of these workshops. Please let Carrie, Sarah, or me know if you'd like to do so and we will gladly help you to register  through the Knowledge Center so that you are good-to-go.

Faculty/Staff IDs

Faculty and Staff who still need ID can come during the open ID office hours below:

Mondays      11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Tuesdays       2:30 – 5:30 PM

 The ID office is located in the 2nd floor lobby of the Thomas Center.  Employees need to bring a completed and signed Faculty/Staff ID request form completed by their supervisor.  If employees can not make the listed times, they can email Nick Owens (nowens@virginiawestern.edu) or Natasha Lee (nlee@virginiawestern.edu) to set up an appointment.

Give Up! for Food for Thought

Food For Thought: An Edible Education Partnership, administered by the Virginia Western Educational Foundation, is featured this month as the recipient of Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op’s community awareness and fund raising program, Give Up! 

Through Give Up! you may “round up” their purchases to the nearest dollar and contribute your change to Food For Thought throughout the month of January.  Money raised will be put toward the purchase of garden tools, seeds, gloves and boots for James Madison Middle School.

Educational Foundation Book Fund Update

The Educational Foundation Book Fund is depleted for Spring 2014. Thank you to all faculty and staff for coordinating with your students to ensure that they have everything they need to be successful in school.

ODU Offices Closed January 20

ODU Offices will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, January 21 at 8:00 am.

Navigating Financial Aid for Advisors–Session Today

Eliminate your confusion about financial aid by attending the Navigating Financial Aid professional development sessions. Get useful information advisors  and faculty members need to effectively discuss financial aid with their students. All sessions are in the Natural Science Center and will be held:

  • Monday, January 20 from 12-1
  • Thursday, January 23 from 2-3
  • Friday, January 24 from 9-10

Activity to benefit Joanie White's daughter and her family who lost their home and possessions due to house fire before Christmas.

Due weather conditions on December 8, 2013, the benefit planned for the Rumsey Family Fire Fund suffered and had a very poor turn out.  They are going to try again and hope that you will join the event for great music, tons of amazing silent auction items, baked goods and great company. The family has found a permanent home but replacing everything for a mother and family of five children is a great undertaking.
