Information regarding October 23 Dedication Event

Virginia Western Community College invites members of the Roanoke Valley and our college community to celebrate the advancement of community college education on Wednesday, October 23. The Dedication of the Center for Science and Health Professions in honor of Horace G. and Ann H. Fralin will begin with a formal speaking program at 4:30 p.m. Invited speakers will begin arriving on campus at approximately 3 p.m. and guests will begin arriving by 4 p.m.

Please plan to park in the following parking lots on October 23:

  • Chapman Hall (lot 1/1E)
  • Thomas Center (lot 4)
  • Webber Hall (lot 7)
  • Top of hill behind Anderson Hall (lot 8E)

To accommodate the increased traffic, the following parking lots/spaces will be reserved for the entire day:

  • Fishburn Hall (lot 5)
  • Administrative lot (lot 6)
  • Spaces along McNeil Drive
  • Center for Science and Health Professions (lot 8)
  • Colonial Avenue/College Services (lot 9)
  • Tennis Courts/Whitman Theater (lot 15)--tentative based on completion

Roanoke City names President Sandel Citizen of the Year

Roanoke City honored our own President Robert H. Sandel as the 2013 Citizen of the year on Saturday at the reopening of Elmwood Park. Dr. Sandel was recognized for his outstanding leadership at Virginia Western and his dedication to numerous civic causes and organizations around Roanoke. He was surprised by his family attending the ceremony to honor him. Please join in congratulating Dr. Sandel for the momentous and well-deserved honor!

Lecture at Hollins University in the Niederer Auditorium, Wetherill Visual Arts Center on Monday, October 28th at 7:30p.m. with a book signing to follow.

Employee Flu Shot Event: Thursday, October 24th

Flu shots are now available free through the Commonwealth of Virginia healthcare plans.  Appointments are still available but they are filling up fast!

7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

  • All employees and retirees, their spouses and covered children are welcome!
  • Children age 9 and under must have a prescription to receive the vaccine from their doctor.
  • Plan members who bring a COVA Care or COVA HDHP health insurance card will receive flu shots at no cost!
  • There is a $31.99 charge for employees without insurance.

Appointments will be made in five (5) minute intervals.  Please arrive five (5) minutes early to allow time for forms completion.

Adobe Connect System will be Removed on November 1

Adobe Connect System will be removed on Friday, November 1, 2013. This system has been used by VWCC faculty and staff for many years. It includes:

  • Adobe Connect: for Creating Web Conferencing Sessions or Online Office Hours
  • Adobe Presenter: for Creating Online Narrated Presentations

You will not be able to access Adobe Connect account on/after November 1. If you still have content that needs to be downloaded from this system, please contact Carrie Halpin at CHalpin@virginiawestern.edu for information.

Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing is the new system that VCCS is offering to our faculty and staff. To learn how to use Blackboard Collaborate to create web conferencing sessions, online office hours, and narrated presentations, please register our training session at this page.


Please join Dr. Wilmer, Dr. Sandel and the rest of the college community at a reception for our visiting International Professor from The Netherlands, John Bello this Thursday, October 24th from 2 - 4 pm in the second floor lobby of Fishburn Hall. Professor Bello has been enjoying our college, visiting classes and learning about our commonalities during his visit to VWCC.
