October is Cybersecurity Month – Cybersecurity Tip #2

Don’t click on links in email even when they appear to come from a legitimate source.  Phishing scams will send emails that look very authentic, and then include a link to click on, which will take you to a webpage that will also look authentic and then request personal information, which is captured and sent to an illegitimate source.  If the email appears to be from a company that you do business with, contact them directly either by phone or a direct link to their website, rather than using the link in an email.  One of the dead giveaways on phishing emails is to look at the email address that it was sent from.  If the sending email address has no relationship to the company, it’s definitely spam.

Protect loved ones from phishing scams. – The most targeted consumers for phishing scams are people over 60 and students.  The former because they’re likely to be too trusting and not all that familiar with computers.  The latter because they are very familiar with computers, think they’re invincible, and tend to conduct a lot of their personal business on the computer.
