The Virginia Western Community College\nEducational Foundation presented the 2019 Community College Impact Award to Maury\nL. Strauss and the Strauss Family, in recognition of his $1 million naming gift\nin support of the Virginia Western\nForward Endowment Fund: A Vision of Dr. Charles W. Steger Jr.<\/em> The award was\npresented Wednesday at the Educational Foundation’s Annual Scholarship and Awards\nCeremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the highest honors the College can bestow, the Community\nCollege Impact Award serves to recognize significant philanthropic and\ncommunity support by individuals, corporations or organizations that will provide\nperpetuating benefits for Virginia Western, its students and the region at\nlarge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Virginia Western Community College\ndedicated the Maury & Sheila Strauss Family Student Life Center <\/em><\/strong>in\nJanuary 2019 in recognition of Strauss’ visionary leadership in support of\nstudent success and regional economic development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Maury\nis a very special human being,” said Dr.\nRobert H. Sandel, President of Virginia Western. “We\nare honored to celebrate this vision of the Strauss family’s philanthropy,\nwhich will make a true difference in our students’ lives, and will help drive a\nstrong future for our community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strauss, founder of\nStrauss Development Corp. and a longtime community benefactor,\nsaid he believes in giving back to the community that helped build his business\nand a home for his family. Virginia Western “holds a warm spot in his heart” for\nthe power that higher education brings to the lives of its students. Sheila\nStrauss, a well-known supporter of the arts and nonprofit organizations in the\nRoanoke Valley, passed away in 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $1 million gift\nfrom the Strauss family launched the public phase of the Educational\nFoundation’s unrestricted endowment initiative, the Virginia Western\nForward Endowment Fund, a vision of Dr. Charles W. Steger Jr.<\/em><\/strong>, named in\nhonor of the Foundation’s late Board of Directors Chairman and President of\nVirginia Tech.  This unrestricted\nendowment effort will flexibly empower and sustain the college to address, now\nand in perpetuity, educational excellence in a rapidly-changing economic\nenvironment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
