Virginia Western Community College will host its 10th<\/sup> annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Healthcare (STEM-H) Summit and Employment Fair for high school and community college students on Friday, Oct. 7. More than 50 STEM-H based organizations and businesses will be on hand at the free event to share information about high-demand career pathways in the Roanoke Region. The Summit will be held from 9:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and the career fair from 1-3 p.m.<\/p>\n

In 2015, nearly 300 high school juniors and seniors visited the Virginia Western for the STEM-H Summit and Employment Fair. In addition to the employer displays and opportunities to interact with Virginia Western students, the 2016 STEM-H Summit and Employment Fair will provide hands-on exposure at each of the many stations and laboratories located in the Advanced Technology Center and the Fralin Center for Science and Health Professions.<\/p>\n

Activities include a look at an off-road vehicle built and raced earlier this year by Virginia Western students, a robotics demonstration and a look at Computer Aided Design (CAD), which allows industry the opportunity to develop virtual designs of products and test them before having to buy expensive raw materials. Additionally, the Fralin Center will offer informative tours of healthcare programs such as practical nursing, radiography, dental hygiene and human anatomy.<\/p>\n

This event is an opportunity for business, industry and community partners to educate high school and community college students on the skills and knowledge they will need to be successful when they complete their education. Providing students with a career pipeline will support the Roanoke Region’s desire to be an economically diverse region with a well-educated workforce.<\/p>\n
