The following resources are helpful for those who want more information about other types of testing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ACT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ACT Assessment<\/a> is a college entrance exam designed to assess high school students’ general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. The tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The ACT Assessment is administered at several schools in the Roanoke Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blue Ridge Literacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Blue Ridge Literacy (BRL) provides one-on-one and small group tutoring services as well as classroom educational experiences, all custom designed to help adults learn to read and write English. Adults learn individually, within family systems, within ethnic groupings, or through professional classroom instructors, as is appropriate for each situation. BRL has over 26 years of success working with both American-born basic literacy learners and immigrants from a wide range of nationalities. BRL also offers special classes to assist students in preparing for and passing community college COMPASS testing. CLEP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP)<\/a> provides students of any age with the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses. CLEP examinations cover material taught in courses that most students take as requirements in the first two years of college. Colleges usually grant the same amount of credit to students earning satisfactory scores on the CLEP examination as it grants to students successfully completing that course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ETS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Educational Testing Service<\/a> is the world’s largest private educational testing and measurement organization. ETS’s primary purpose has been the development of tests and other assessment tools to provide information (including test scores and interpretative data) to test takers, educational institutions, and others who require this information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GED<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0GED<\/a>\u00a0exam is designed for people who did not complete high school. By passing the GED test, adults may meet educational requirements for employment, job promotion, or admission to college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The testing center at the Roanoke Higher Education Center serves as a regional testing center for the GED exam. For more information, contact the testing center: 540-767-6118 or 540-767-6011 or email testing@education.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SAT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The SAT I is a three-hour test that measures verbal and mathematical skills. SAT I scores are used for college admission purposes because the test predicts readiness for college work. There are also SAT II: Subject Tests, which are one-hour tests in specific subjects. Many colleges require or recommend one or more of the subject tests for admission or placement. For more information on SAT tests, please visit the Collegeboard<\/a> web site. To have test scores sent to Virginia Western Community College, select CEEB Code: 5868.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The TOEFL<\/a> measures the ability of nonnative speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is used in college and university settings. Scores on the test are required by more than 4,300 two- and four-year colleges and universities, professional schools, and sponsoring institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prometric Testing Center<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prometric testing centers administer many computer-based tests, including the GRE and Praxis I. For more information, contact the Roanoke area testing center:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
