{"id":4022,"date":"2020-12-15T15:33:29","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T20:33:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/library\/?page_id=4022&#038;preview_id=4022"},"modified":"2025-07-11T16:13:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T20:13:13","slug":"placement-testing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/library\/testing-center\/placement-testing\/","title":{"rendered":"Placement Testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"background-color: #d9edf7; color: #31708f; border-left-color: #31708f; \" class=\"ub-styled-box ub-notification-box wp-block-ub-styled-box\" id=\"ub-styled-box-94571ac3-e7eb-4506-b9e9-30b3361c0ba7\">\n<p class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\" id=\"ub-styled-box-notification-content-\">The Virginia Placement Test is not required of most entering students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virginia Western is currently using alternative methods for determining placement for applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a prospective high school\/home school dual enrollment student with questions about placement, please contact your school counseling office or the Virginia Western Dual Enrollment Office (540-857-7313).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a prospective applicant who will have completed high school or earned your GED prior to beginning your program of study, a Virginia Western Enrollment Navigator will contact you after you submit your application to discuss Direct Enrollment.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Placement testing is required of some students before beginning classes at Virginia Western. All students who are entering a program of study or enrolling in any courses requiring a mathematics or English prerequisite (<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.virginiawestern.edu\/content.php?catoid=24&amp;navoid=2547\">Description of Courses<\/a>) may need to take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT). This may include transfer students who do not have credit in mathematics or English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students must submit their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apply.vccs.edu\/applications\/vccs\/apply.html?application_id=4098\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">applications for admission<\/a>&nbsp;to Virginia Western before taking the placement tests. Placement testing must be completed prior to meeting with an academic adviser to establish a course schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can retake the placement test one time within 12 months of their initial attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/library\/testing-center\/about-placement\/\">Click here for more information about the Virginia Placement Test and how to prepare for it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"exemptions-for-placement-testing\">Placement Test Requirements and Exemptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Please refer to the links below for information about Placement Test requirements and exemptions for Placement Testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/about\/legal-and-policies\/policies\/student-affairs\/i-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General Admissions Policy (I-12)<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/about\/legal-and-policies\/policies\/student-affairs\/i-7\/\">Placement Testing Policy (I-7)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"taking-the-virginia-placement-test-at-virginia-western\">Taking the Virginia Placement Test at Virginia Western<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Placement tests are given in the Testing Center located on the ground floor of Brown Library. Hours of operation are listed to the right.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Placement tests are not timed but it will generally take between 3 and 4 hours to take both tests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No appointment is necessary to take a placement test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will need a picture ID and your student identification number (received once you submit an application to VWCC).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is no fee for placement testing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any student who is retesting will need to present a testing slip from Advising.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Please do not bring children with you to the Testing Center.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please feel free to call the&nbsp;<strong>Testing Center<\/strong>&nbsp;with questions:&nbsp;<strong>540-857-7250<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"placement-testing-policies\">Placement Testing Policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You may not have any personal belongings with you while you are testing. All electronic devices should be turned off and stored away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No outside resources, papers, books, electronic or computer\/web-based resources of any kind can be used during the test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lock down browser that will not allow you to access anything other than the test will be used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"placement-test-results\">Placement Test Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After completing the placement test, students will be given a copy of their score reports to take to their academic advisor or counselor for further discussion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Placement test scores are valid for 5 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One retest is allowed within 12 months of the initial attempt of the Virginia Placement Test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once a student has enrolled in a developmental course in English or math, retaking the placement test in that subject is not permitted.
