There is no PC hardware as there is for a physical laptop or desktop. This desktop resides on this shared server in the college data center and is accessed remotely.

Why does Virginia Western use virtual desktops?

Virginia Western uses virtual desktops for efficient management of campus computers. Shared resources make it easier to allocate and support users. Benefits include better security, faster problem-solving, energy savings, flexibility, and audit compliance. Office moves are simplified since the “desktop” is remotely accessed by a common thin client. It never moves like a physical PC. The thin client remains in the office, while the user can relocate or work elsewhere using another thin client. Users can connect to their virtual desktops from anywhere, supporting mobility with minimal cost.

Buying a desktop or laptop for over 600 users is prohibitively expensive. With virtual desktops, a system can be provided for all users and accessed by anyone with a PC or laptop. Most people own a laptop or desktop and have an internet connection. This is an efficient way to provide adjunct faculty a secure computing platform.

An additional advantage is that the virtual systems produce a minimal carbon footprint and contribute little electronic waste, reflecting the college’s commitment to environmental responsibility. As there is no actual data stored on the thin client and it functions solely when connected to the college network, issues related to theft and data security are mitigated. Furthermore, access to multiple virtual desktops can be granted, supporting seamless transitions between different versions of Windows.

What are the benefits of using a virtual desktop?

Better Security

When you access a virtual desktop, you are connecting to a computer within the college’s secure internal network. These advanced security systems provide improved protection against malware and other threats.

Virtual desktops are disposable and allow for rapid recovery if any problems occur. If the virtual machine is compromised or corrupted, it can be remotely repaired or replaced without requiring an office visit from a technician. Similarly, if your device used to access the virtual desktop stops working, it can be simply swapped out.

Performance

Administrators can allocate resources to users as needed. This approach replaces the one-size fits all practice, which can provide far more computing power than needed to users that simply browse the web, check email and produce documents. Because a virtual desktop isn’t tied to the client device’s hardware, even older computers can act as remote access clients for faster virtual desktops. Connecting an outdated system to a virtual desktop lets it perform like a modern machine, reducing slowness. This allows users with low-powered home computers to delay upgrades or avoid bringing work laptops home.

Flexibility

Support staff can access and resolve issues remotely, eliminating time consuming office troubleshooting.

Users can be assigned several virtual desktops, allowing a gradual transition between the current version of Windows and a newer version.

Anywhere Access

These desktops can be accessed from multiple devices both on and off campus if there is an internet connection, making anywhere access a key advantage. Reliable performance can be achieved using basic cable and DSL connections or MiFi hotspots. Security is maintained when using public Wi-Fi networks, such as those at conferences, hotels, or other locations. All communications with the college are fully encrypted and protected using SSL.

Security via 2 Factor Authentication Off Campus

Remote access is secure. All remote access by faculty and staff to virtual desktops requires Microsoft multi-factor authentication.

Below you will find basic information about virtual desktops.
