{"id":8799,"date":"2017-08-15T18:39:16","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T18:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/notes\/?p=5"},"modified":"2021-04-12T23:24:53","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T23:24:53","slug":"lets-grow-ideas-and-grants-together-in-the-green-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/2017\/08\/lets-grow-ideas-and-grants-together-in-the-green-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s grow ideas (and grants) together in the Green House"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&nbsp;dutifully scribbled down all of the tips from this workshop for Roanoke grant writers, which I attended shortly after starting my &#8220;Grant Specialist&#8221; job at Virginia Western last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I<\/span>&nbsp;was confident about my writing skills &#8212; I had been&nbsp;practicing for 15 years at the local newspaper &#8212; but I was new to higher education and still learning the grant development process. Marilyn Herbert-Ashton, grant Jedi and founder of Virginia Western&#8217;s grants office, had taught me so much already &#8212; and she encouraged me to attend this workshop to learn more about what NOT to do with grant proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A panel of representatives from local foundations &#8212; the folks who decide which proposals get funded &#8212; talked about some common mistakes they see on applications. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This list included:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Vague, unfocused writing &#8230; or writing that is too academic.<\/strong><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Requests that don&#8217;t address a demonstrated need.<\/strong><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Too much data.<\/strong><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Simply not following the application&#8217;s directions.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All seemed pretty straightforward.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But then, almost as an aside once we got into a meatier discussion, one panelist from a l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ocal healthcare foundation bemoaned the <strong>lack of innovation<\/strong>. She was tired of seeing the same ideas&nbsp;<\/span>proposed year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That&#8217;s when my joy bulb lit up, as I&#8217;m <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">alllllllllll <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">about ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/04\/Light_bulb_yellow_icon.svg_-300x300-1.png\" alt=\"light bulb\" class=\"wp-image-9094\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/04\/Light_bulb_yellow_icon.svg_-300x300-1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/04\/Light_bulb_yellow_icon.svg_-300x300-1-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I&#8217;ve researched the squishy concept of creativity for years, both in formal academic settings and through my creative work at the newspaper. I&#8217;m driven by the questions: How can we generate better ideas? What are the conditions necessary for creativity to thrive? And most importantly: How do we generate more creative ideas to address wicked social problems?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ideas &#8212; our imagination &#8212; are the real power behind grants. The hard work comes when we try to act on those ideas. The imaginative proposals with the best plans of action are the grants that get funded. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Which leads me to the name of this blog.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I&#8217;m a fan of simplicity, but &#8220;Grants Blog&#8221; was just way too boring.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When creativity experts talk about incubating ideas, they often use the term &#8220;hothouse,&#8221; which is &nbsp;just another word for greenhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"238\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/04\/2928856.jpg\" alt=\"green house\" class=\"wp-image-9093\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I like to think of our role in the grants office as idea gardeners, so we&#8217;ve named this space <strong>&#8220;the G<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>reen House.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The more I think about it, the more the analogy makes sense &#8212; and not just because &nbsp;<\/span>Grants = $$$ = Green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With its floor-to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">-ceiling windows that overlook the Court of Four Seasons, the grants office on the top floor of Fishburn Hall does have the feel of a greenhouse. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Think of us as the hothouse that can sprout your ideas &#8212; we can help create optimal conditions for your idea seedlings to grow. More tending, weeding and watering is required once those ideas are actually funded. And even if those ideas are not funded on your first attempt &#8230; or they change significantly as we garden &#8230; you might still be cultivating amazing relationships that grow beyond your imagination.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"109\" height=\"141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/04\/plant.png\" alt=\"plant with dollar signs on leaves\" class=\"wp-image-9092\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will your ideas bloom? Hopefully.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Might they cross-pollinate throughout the campus, or even spread to other colleges? Perhaps.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are we already tiring of the gardening cliches? DEFINITELY.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I&#8217;ll spare you more of the flowery metaphors and will leave you with some examples of what to expect from the Green House blog in the weeks and months ahead:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Where are the grant opportunities?<\/strong> That&#8217;s one of the most common questions we get. The Green House blog will spotlight the best resources, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yggOMESFnys&amp;index=10&amp;list=PLDMmkT9JmcjOsDZXwUyBV5dO8thYhNn-8\">we have already listed in this video<\/a>. And on a related note: It&#8217;s my personal mission to get more faculty and staff to apply for the Educational Foundation&#8217;s Innovation grants, so you&#8217;ll be hearing a lot about those in the future.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Grant success stories from around campus.<\/strong> There&#8217;s so much to brag about!<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Interviews with your grant champion colleagues<\/strong>, who can share helpful tips (and lunch recommendations).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Data points<\/strong> from our Institutional Effectiveness Office and elsewhere.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Creative ideas and articles<\/strong> across the higher education landscape that might fertilize our own projects.
