{"id":10087,"date":"2021-08-31T12:49:56","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T16:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/?p=10087"},"modified":"2022-02-25T09:36:48","modified_gmt":"2022-02-25T14:36:48","slug":"innovation-grant-lab-series-lets-put-on-our-thinking-caps-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/2021\/08\/innovation-grant-lab-series-lets-put-on-our-thinking-caps-september\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation Grant Lab series: Let&#8217;s put on our Thinking Caps (September)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hello, and welcome to the Innovation Lab!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is&nbsp;<strong>a virtual lab<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8230;&nbsp; a digital makerspace where we ask a lot of questions, experiment, and play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first project is an asynchronous workshop series:&nbsp;<strong>How to Design a Successful Innovation Grant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in the series begins on this blog today, and it will end in March 2022, the same month Innovation Grant proposals are due.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully this approach will help you slowly explore your ideas &#8212; on your own time, at your convenience &#8212; as you continue to juggle your regular to-do list.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are serious about pursuing an Innovation Grant, I would suggest you start this journey with us in September, but you can always catch up anytime before the March deadline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And please join us if you&#8217;re just curious, or some of your ideas are half-baked. That&#8217;s what this process is for! No commitments necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/2021\/08\/welcome-innovators-the-innovation-grant-lab-opens-sept-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last week<\/a>, I shared <strong>Lab Lesson #1:<\/strong> <strong>Grant proposals are not time wasted &#8230; even if you FAIL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s boldly move forward, straight to <strong>Lab Lesson #2: Know the rules of the game<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, I do approach grant applications like a game (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/2018\/01\/if-youre-having-trouble-coming-up-with-ideas-for-the-innovation-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">or a &#8220;Project Runway&#8221; challenge<\/a>), which makes writing grants much more fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we learn about a potential grant opportunity, the very first thing I do is <strong>read the application<\/strong>, often called an <strong>RFP<\/strong>, or Request for Proposal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I read it closely, with highlighter in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m looking for the boundaries &#8230; the constraints to my boundless creativity. \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RFP is where we learn the rules. You don&#8217;t have much of a chance for funding if you don&#8217;t follow the rules &#8212; and that means specific instructions for the application itself, along with the rules for how you can spend the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s give it a try. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is my summary of the Innovation Grants here at Virginia Western.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See if you can spot some basic boundaries: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are Innovation Grants?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These annual grants are awarded by the Virginia Western Community College Educational Foundation. We took a break in 2021 due to COVID, but the Foundation plans to award another round in Spring 2022. The maximum award is $10,000, and projects are expected to be finished in about 10 months (May to March). All members of Virginia Western faculty and classified staff, including adjunct faculty and part-time employees, are eligible to submit proposals. The deadline for applications is always the very end of March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Was that too easy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully you picked up on the <strong>maximum award <\/strong>($10,000), and the <strong>project duration<\/strong> (10 months, from May to March). The <strong>proposal deadline<\/strong> is the end of March, which gives us plenty of time to plan. You should have also been encouraged to learn all faculty and staff are eligible to apply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s go one step further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we delve into idea storming, it&#8217;s important to read the actual grant application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s only five pages long, which is pretty short in the world of grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skimming is fine. If anything, you are filling your creative, subconscious mind so it can work through these questions in the background, while you keep focusing on your day-to-day priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This application is from 2020 (and includes an outdated deadline), but it will give you an idea of the expectations &#8230; what &#8220;done&#8221; looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like background music, start up my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-Ileb6iOIag&amp;list=PLNI5fif4Ll_v9-tFdJ5xg394NLS_xse7k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Star City soundtrack<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because every important project needs its own playlist, right? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/InnovationGrantApplication.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px\" aria-label=\"Embed of Embed of InnovationGrantApplication..\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-b3ff6b3d-bcb9-4875-b8bb-2dc936bfd7a7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/InnovationGrantApplication.pdf\">InnovationGrantApplication<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/InnovationGrantApplication.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-b3ff6b3d-bcb9-4875-b8bb-2dc936bfd7a7\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, now that you have skimmed the grant application, let&#8217;s dive into some of your ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During my early studies into creativity, I learned about an exercise called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debonogroup.com\/services\/core-programs\/six-thinking-hats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Six Thinking Hats<\/a>, which helps separate our thinking into six different functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re going to do a modified version, which I will call <strong>Thinking Caps. <\/strong>Picture yourself going through a trunk full of costumes &#8230; and you choose one hat for each role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is going to help us think through our ideas from different perspectives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each role, ask the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/08\/differenthats-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10121\" width=\"434\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/08\/differenthats-1.jpg 877w, https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/08\/differenthats-1-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.virginiawestern.edu\/grants\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/08\/differenthats-1-768x479.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thinking cap #1:<\/strong> <strong>YOURSELF<\/strong>,<strong> the INNOVATOR<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What problem are you trying to solve?<\/li><li>How will you do it?<\/li><li>Who will you connect with to make this successful? <\/li><li>What does this change look like if you&#8217;re successful? <\/li><li>How will the project be sustained in the future?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thinking cap #2: THE STUDENTS (or those directly impacted by your idea)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do I need this?<\/li><li>Will I use this?<\/li><li>How will this serve my needs?<\/li><li>Would I find this delightful?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thinking cap #3: THE GRANT REVIEWERS<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How original is the idea? Is this project innovative?<\/li><li>Is there really a need?<\/li><li>What is the potential impact for the college?<\/li><li>Is the project sustainable?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Is this a good investment?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How did that feel? Are your ideas starting to take shape? Are you left with more questions than answers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No worries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll break down each of the big questions over the next six months.
