Shared Services courses are VWCC courses offered in partnership with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). These courses allow students to earn VWCC credit while taking an online course with a NOVA instructor, as well as use the VWCC testing centers to take proctored tests. Each course will have the following statement in the notes area: "Shared Services course offered through NOVA. Please contact Shared Distance Learning Courses for more information".
As a Shared Service student, you will have access to all the services provided by Northern Virginia Community College in addition to the resources available to all students at Virginia Western Community College.
Shared Service courses are online courses that can be taken anywhere you have internet access. Courses utilize Blackboard, the VCCS online learning management system, to view course content. All courses will be available in Blackboard the first day the class starts. Students taking these courses should receive a letter from Northern Virginia Community College after registering for the course. Students will be invited to participate in an online orientation before the first day of class. Details will be emailed to the student’s email account. VWCC has an on-campus orientation for all new students each fall semester. For more information, please visit our website. Students are required to use their student email (firstname.lastname@example.org) account when communicating with faculty and staff at VWCC and NOVA.
Once you register for your Shared Service course(s) it will appear in the Student Information System under your course schedule. You can pay for your course online via the Student Information System or on-campus at the Cashiers Office.
For payment information, please visit our Tuition & Payment page.
Textbooks for Shared Services courses are available in the VWCC bookstores. You will also have the option of purchasing your course materials from the online bookstore.
If you are a financial aid student, you will be able to use award money to purchase materials in the VWCC bookstore. If any financial aid is left over after using funds on tuition and course materials, you will get the amount left in the award amount that was not used when reimbursement checks are issued.
Shared Service course(s) require proctored testing during the semester. Students can be proctored at any VWCC testing center location or request an off-site proctored location. Please contact the Shared Services coordinator at email@example.com to arrange your proctored testing locations.
For more information on off-site proctoring, please visit the NOVA website.
Holidays and breaks for Shared Service courses are the same dates as the college that you are enrolled in for that specific course. For example, if you are a student at VWCC, yet are taking a Shared Services course through NOVA the holidays and breaks for the Shared Service course through NOVA would be the same as NOVA's holidays and breaks. However, all other classes that you are taking through VWCC would have the same holiday and break dates as VWCC's holiday and break dates.
