In her new book, “Paper Girl: A Memoir of Home and Family in a Fractured America,” Roanoke’s Beth Macy takes on an assignment she never imagined – documenting what happened to her Ohio hometown in the 40 years since she left. Raised in poverty but her education fueled by a Pell grant, Macy went on to a successful career as award-winning Roanoke Times journalist, Virginia Western Community College instructor and best-selling author (Hulu’s “Dopesick,” “Factory Man” and “Truevine”).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re invited to “An Evening with Beth Macy,” in support of the Great Expectations program<\/a> serving former foster care youth attending Virginia Western Community College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHEN: Thursday, October 16<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHERE: Charter Hall at the City Market Building, 32 Market Square SE, Roanoke, VA 24011<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCHEDULE:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 to 7 p.m.: Reception<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 to 7:30 p.m.: “Roanoke’s Foster Care Crisis” panel, hosted by Jenna Zibton of WSLS 10 News and Great Expectations Success Coach JW Taylor<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7:30 to 8:30 p.m.: Author presentation and Q&A<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets are $40 per person and include a copy of the newly released “Paper Girl” signed by the author. Prosecco bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served up by Chef John Schopp’s Center Stage Catering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
