This includes interference with IT operations and violation of VCCS policy, laws, or regulations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of information security incidents include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ad2f72ca wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Computer system breach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unauthorized access to or use of systems, software, or data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unauthorized changes to systems, software, or data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potential unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information, such as PII (Personally Identifiable Information) or FERPA-protected student data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss or theft of equipment storing institutional data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Denial of service attack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interference with the intended use of IT resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compromised user accounts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inappropriate use of VWCC computers or network infrastructure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Reporting suspicious activity early helps minimize risks to sensitive information and ensures we can effectively contain and address potential threats before they escalate. The more information we have about a potential breach, the better equipped we will be to respond to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong>How to Report an Information Security Incident<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2003Contact the Help Desk<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2003\u2003<strong>Phone:<\/strong> (540) 857-7354<br>\u2003\u2003<strong>Email:<\/strong> <a href=\"mailto:helpdesk@virginiawestern.edu\">helpdesk@virginiawestern.edu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect email or other reporting methods are compromised, report directly by phone or in person. The Help Desk is in the Business Science Building, room M273.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2003<strong>Document Important Details<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Note messages on the screen, unusual behavior, or other signs of compromise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you interacted with suspicious emails or links, provide all relevant details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you suspect a breach or incident, do not turn off your computer. Instead, unplug the Ethernet cable and\/or disconnect from Wi-Fi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re ever uncertain whether an activity is suspicious, err on the side of caution and report it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your report will be handled discreetly, without blame, and we will provide guidance on any necessary next steps.
