Fall 2014 Tuition Payment Plan – Sign Up TODAY!

To help meet educational expenses, Virginia Western Community College is pleased to participate in Nelnet’s tuition payment plan. For a non-refundable fee of $25.00, Nelnet allows monthly, interest-free tuition payments. The earlier students enroll the more payment options they may have. The payment plan for Fall 2014 will begin on July 1, 2014.

If a payment plan is not established or if tuition is not paid by JULY 24, 2014 students who registered early for classes will be dropped and will need to repeat the registration process. Financial Aid students are protected from enrollment cancellation up to the amount of their Financial Aid award. Financial Aid students should pay any differences between their total award and the amount due to prevent enrollment cancellation.

Payment plan sign-up instructions and deadlines will be posted on the Student Bulletin, Facebook, Twitter, www.virginiawestern.edu and on the VWtvs located across campus.

Step by step directions on how to enroll in a payment plan are available at http://www.virginiawestern.edu/studenthelp/student/tuitionpaymentplan.php

Dean of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

I am very excited to announce that Amy Anguiano has accepted the position of Dean of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (LASS). Amy is well qualified for this position. She holds a Masters in Communication from Northern Illinois University and has served as Interim Dean of LASS for two years. Prior to serving as Interim Dean, she served as the program head of the Communication Studies and Theatre program. Additionally, she has been a full-time faculty member teaching communication studies since 2007 and an adjunct faculty member from 2004-2007.

In her interview, Amy demonstrated her experience with community college leadership and more specifically an understanding of the leadership needs of LASS. She presented herself as an advocate for the faculty with the desire to make LASS, VWCC, and the students successful. She has direct experience working with dual enrollment and distance learning and is credited with developing public speaking as a successful distance learning course that meets the needs of students in the digital age.

I feel extremely confident passing the torch of leadership of LASS to Amy. Please help me congratulate Amy on her new position.

Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs

Plus 50 Pre-Conference Workshop on Engaging Adult Learners

The VWCC Plus 50 Initiative and the Academic Link are co-sponsoring a free pre-conference workshop on best practices for engaging adult learners. The workshop will be held on July 24, one day prior to the 2014 Instructional Technology Mini-Conference and will run from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. The workshop is open to all VWCC employees though faculty and tutors will find it especially relevant.

Entitled From Pedagogy to Andragogy: Best Practices for an Engaged Learner, the workshop will be presented by Melissa Maybury Lubin, Ph.D., the director of the Virginia Tech Richmond and Hampton Roads Centers. “Andragogy,” according to Dr. Lubin, is “. . . a flexible, enhanced, inclusive mode of learning that promotes a positive environment for learning for both children and adults.” In this workshop, Dr. Lubin, who earned her Ph.D. in Adult Learning and Human Resource Development at Virginia Tech, will draw on her experience and expertise in developing and engaging adult learners to help attendees understand how “the principles of andragogy [can] inform the practice of teaching in our interactions with adult learners.”

The workshop will provide a foundation and context for the mini-technology conference the following day, so if you’re planning to attend the mini-conference, please make plans to attend the workshop, as well. If you aren’t attending the mini-conference, please plan to attend the workshop anyway – particularly if you teach or tutor. You’ll be glad you did!

Time: Thursday, July 24, 2014 from 2 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
Location: HP208
