LASS Colloquium 2015

Please join us for the first college wide Spring Colloquium brought to you by the School of Liberal Arts and Social Science. Our colloquium will be held in Whitman Theater (note the location change) on Monday, January 26th from 12-2 pm.   We have a great event scheduled!  All are welcome. Plan to come and go as your schedule permits.  The faculty presenters that we have lined up are as follows:

Brad Burkholder – A Reading of Published Poems

Sue Thomas – A Driving Tour With Car-Art (Sue is the Recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award)

Annemarie Carroll – Helping Students Manage Class Anxiety

Thelma Simpson and Alexander Scott – How We Teach Difficult Grammar Topics in Spanish Class (Thelma is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award)

Ann Moser and Amy White – Teaching Biology using the novel Prodigal Summer, by Barbara Kingsolver.  A combination of biology and English!

This is a great professional development opportunity and a great way to see what LASS faculty members are doing in the classroom!  See you there!

Spring 2015 TOTAL Workshops Available Now

VWCC has joined a consortium with BRCC, NRCC, WCC, and VHCC to maximize resources and offer as many TOTAL workshops to faculty as possible. The Spring 2015 TOTAL workshops are available now. For information about TOTAL Workshops, please go to: http://www.virginiawestern.edu/elit/total.php

Each workshop focuses on a single topic for your professional development plan. Registration is open. The schedule is:

Jan. 26, 2015  - Blackboard Basics - 2 weeks

Feb. 2, 2015 - Using Best Practices in Online Teaching - 4 weeks

Mar. 2, 2015 - Preparing Student Learning Objectives - 2 weeks

Apr. 6, 2015 - Implementing Open Educational Resources  - 3 weeks

Instructions for Accessing VCCS TOTAL Courses via the Knowledge Center:

  1. Login to the VWCC Knowledge Center: https://covkc.virginia.gov/vwcc/
  2. Go to Learning Center >> Course Catalog
  3. Enter Keywords: VCCS:TOTAL in the Search Text box. Click Search.
  4. Click on the course link of the course in which you would like to enroll, e.g. VCCS: TOTAL Implementing Open Educational Resources Workshop
  5. Click on the BRCC section.
  6. Click Enroll. You will see that your status changes to “Enrolled.” You will also see a statement confirming the date you enrolled: e.g. You enrolled in this item on 1/21/2015.
  7. After enrolling, you will be able to see the course(s) in which you are enrolled in the Scheduled Training box located on My Homepage: Home >> My Workspace >> My Homepage.

VCCS Paul Lee Professional Development Mini-Grant Opportunities

The VCCS offers two types of grants.

The first is the Paul Lee Professional Development Grant, where a combination of time and expenses is possible, with maximum funding for time at eight credits. Most time is funded at four credits. Note: Summer funding is a flat $2,500 stipend.

The second is the Paul Lee Workshop Mini-Grant with a maximum award of $1,500.

Asian Studies Book Collection on Display in Brown Library

Brown Library is currently displaying the beautiful new books provided through the National Endowment for the Humanities Bridging Cultures-Asian Studies Grant. This collection was acquired thanks to Virginia Western’s participation with UVA in a program called, “Understanding the Non-West: Strengthening Global Humanities at Virginia’s Community Colleges.” The goal is to boost global humanities in Virginia’s community colleges and enrich appreciation for the cultural traditions, literature, and cinema of India, China, Japan, Eastern Asia, and Russia. Get a sneak peek of this gorgeous collection here.

This special collection is on display through Monday, November 24 on the top floor of the Brown Library Building. These books are also available to be checked out!

Virginia Western’s Brown Library has a special collection of books, the Virginia Collection, that are all about Virginia or written by Virginia authors. Many of the books are historical in nature and are rare gems that we are fortunate to have. Others, while they may be historical and informative, certainly pass for interesting as well:

Brown Library Circulation Services for Faculty

Library Circulation services are located on the top floor of the Brown Library Building. Services supporting faculty include:

  • Course Reserves: Materials that you and the division office staff provide for your students to use in the library or for short checkout periods. Materials may include, but are not limited to, textbooks, fiction and non-fiction books, audio/visual materials, course readings, and physical objects, such as rocks for Geology and skulls for Dental Hygiene. Contact Jim Gettys by phone 857-6941 or by e-mail.
  • Assignment Alert!: When you let us know about your assignments in advance of your students coming to the library, we can identify relevant print and electronic resources to support the assignment and provide thoughtful, meaningful assistance to your students. Please see the Faculty Services Infoguide for additional information.
  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL): Allows you and your students to obtain books, journal articles, and other materials that are not available in Brown Library. Faculty requests are honored for materials used for work-related inquiry or to support the mission of the college. The library website has ILL request forms you can submit online or feel free to contact Faith Janney by phone 857-6332 or e-mail.
  • Magazine Route: You can request to have a print magazine or journal regularly sent to your office when it comes off the current periodical racks, then send it back to the library when you finish reading it. Contact Pam Conner by phone 857-7314 or by e-mail.

TOTAL Workshop Credits vs. VaBUG Conference

The fifth annual Virginia Blackboard User Group (VaBUG) conference will take place on Friday, October 24, 2014 in Roanoke, VA at the Holiday Inn at Valley View. The VaBUG conference is a great opportunity for Blackboard users to discover, discuss, learn, and share best practices. In addition, representatives from Blackboard will be on hand to answer your questions, demonstrate new and upcoming features, and receive your feedback regarding your experiences with Blackboard.

Based on how many sessions you attended, VWCC faculty will receive one-week or two-weeks of TOTAL workshop credits. To receive the TOTAL Workshop credit hours, please email the completed form to eLIT@virginiawestern.edu or mail it to eLearning and Instructional Technology department by 5:00pm EST no later than Oct. 31, 2014

One-Week TOTAL Workshop Credit: Attend THREE sessions
Two-Week TOTAL Workshop Credits: Attend FIVE sessions
Note: Keynote speech counts as one session.

TOTAL Workshop Credits vs. VaBUG Conference

VaBUG Conference: Free Registration!

The fifth annual Virginia Blackboard User Group (VaBUG) conference will take place on Friday, October 24, 2014 in Roanoke, VA at the Holiday Inn at Valley View. The VaBUG conference is a great opportunity for Blackboard users to discover, discuss, learn, and share best practices. In addition, representatives from Blackboard will be on hand to answer your questions, demonstrate new and upcoming features, and receive your feedback regarding your experiences with Blackboard.

Based on how many sessions you attend, VWCC faculty will receive one-week or two-weeks of TOTAL workshop credits. These credits will contribute to satisfying the “Professional Development Objectives for Faculty Teaching Hybrid and Online Courses” as outlined in the new Faculty Evaluation and Development Plan (see page 9).

The conference will once again have free registration, so that is even more reason to mark your calendar now. Your conference registration includes a continental breakfast, catered lunch, keynote speaker, and access to all concurrent sessions. The concurrent sessions will be scheduled for 50 minutes (this includes time for questions and answers). Sessions will be organized along the following tracks:

  • Blackboard administration
  • Instructional design
  • Faculty best practices
  • K-12 best practices
