Post Exposure Management Procedure

In the event of a needle-stick/instrument puncture injury involving exposure to body fluids, the following will be done:

  1. Immediately cease procedure, rinse gloved hands, remove gloves and wash area with soap and water.
  2. Complete a NSL Report of Exposure to Blood/Body Fluids. This report will be kept in the academic file/personnel file of the student/faculty member. Campus Police should be called immediately to file an Accidental Injury Report.
  3. Inform the involved persons that the VWCC Policy is to request that they be tested as directed by their healthcare providers; explain that this request is routine under the circumstances and for the protection of all persons involved. Testing is voluntary and individuals have the right to refuse testing. A designated report will be completed.
