NUR 238 Clinical Competencies

The student who successfully completes NUR 238 will be able to meet the criteria listed for the previous course as well as the following criteria:

Professional Behavior

  • develop skill in working as a team member
  • apply legal and ethical guidelines to practice as a student nurse
  • incorporate advocacy into practice as a student nurse
  • demonstrate accountability in the clinical setting
  • attend all assigned clinical and simulation laboratory experiences

Nursing Process

  • analyze data independently and systematically
  • identify abnormalities found on assessment
  • perform an assessment on more than one client
  • develop individualized and comprehensive nursing diagnoses
  • consider recent evidence based clinical practice when planning care
  • plan and implement interventions that are more complex and include all aspects of nursing practice
  • recognize need for involvement of interdisciplinary team members
  • consider discharge planning needs
  • revise the client goals as appropriate

Nursing Interventions

  • apply principles learned in NSL to the performance of nursing skills
  • administer medications to several clients
  • adminster medications, including intravenous administration
  • verbalize medication information to faculty without prompting
  • consider costs when providing client care
  • apply principles learned in NSL to the performance of nursing skills

Knowledge

  • practice critical thinking skills
  • apply the nursing process with an emphasis on pathophysiological changes
  • incorporate biopsychosocial factors when utilizing the nursing process
  • assume the role of a health care promoter
  • implement selected roles of the ADN with increasing skill
  • correlate theoretical knowledge into clinical decision making

Communication

  • use the technology available in the clinical setting with minimal assistance
  • apply the principles of documentation to nursing notes with minimal assistance
  • prioritize care based on report with supervision
  • identify client care priorities in report to primary nurse and/or faculty at end of shift
  • develop organization in providing report
  • apply principles of teaching
  • perform client/family teaching
  • demonstrate ability to communicate therapeutically
