OVERRULED  and  PRESS CUTTINGS

(2 one-act comedies)

by George Bernard Shaw

Adapted & Directed by Ted Mills

Press Cuttings is set in the office of General Mitchener, the British Secretary of War, in 1911.  Central London is under siege to the Women’s Rights movement (“the Suffragets”) who are demanding a right to vote.  It is General Mitchener’s responsibility to put an end to this civil insurrection.   The uncertainty he feels about how to proceed turns to comic despair after the prime minister makes a shocking entrance, followed by the arrival of two formidable ladies who are militantly opposed to women’s rights.

In Overruled, two young couples discover that by a quirk of fate they have been drawn into an affair with the other husband and wife’s mate.  The action takes place in a hotel lobby at the conclusion of an extended sea cruise.  How each spouse deals with his/her part in this indiscretion leads to some very entertaining revelations.

Auditions will be held Tuesday & Wednesday, February 2 & 3rd from 4:30 to 6:30 PM in Whitman Auditorium.  The first rehearsal will be Monday, February 8th.  Overruled has four roles, (2 female and 2 male) ages 25-35.  Press Cuttings has six roles, (3 female and 3 male) ages 25 to 55.  Auditions will be by cold readings from the play.  Copies of the scripts will be on reserve at the 2nd floor desk of Brown Library beginning December 17th.  The plays open April 2nd for five performances.  For further information:   tmills@virginiawestern.edu
