Honors Classes

Are you a student with a cumulative GPA of 3.0? You are eligible to enroll in honors classes now!

  • Receive Honors Credit, which is impressive on your transcript upon transfer.
  • Classes are in a seminar format -- get to know your professor better!
  • Emphasis is on in-depth exploration of course content, development of research, critical thinking, writing and public speaking skills.
  • The educational experience is NOT more difficult, but it IS different and student friendly.
  • Be sure to look for the H1 designation when you register for your classes.

Honors Institute

The Mission of the Honors Institute at Virginia Western Community College is to support creative, highly motivated and academically talented students by providing them with enhanced opportunities for academic and personal growth.

The Honors Institute offers intellectually stimulating coursework, involving smaller, interactive, seminar-style classes. Cultural events, field trips, and participation in the Honors Institute also provide opportunities for learning outside of the classroom.

In-coming Freshman? You must...

  • Be a High School graduate with a GPA of 3.5 or above
  • Have test scores (if available): combined SAT score of 1100 or above; new SAT score of 1650 or above; ACT score of 24 or above

Transfer or Returning VWCC Student? You must...

  • Have a cumulative 3.2 GPA with 12 college credits completed
  • Have two recommendations from former faculty (previous college/university or VWCC)
  • Be enrolled in a program of study

Interested students may download an application. Include with your application a writing sample, 2 recommendations, high school transcripts (new VWCC students only), and college transcripts (if applicable).
