Men's Basketball loses to Fishburne Military

Waynesboro, VA: Virginia Western lost to Fishburne Military Academy 88-114 in Alumni Memorial Gymnasium on Wednesday.  The Rapids stayed close to the Caissons the entire first half, staying within 13 points, and entered halftime with a score of 44-57.  Virginia Western came out fast in the second period, cutting the lead to nine, but Fishburne’s defense allowed the Caissons to pull away with steals and timely rebounding.  Sophomore Damien Harris had a team high 19 points.  The Rapids' next game is at New River Community College, November 20 at 7:30 PM. 

Women's Basketball falls to Patrick Henry

Martinsville, VA: The Rapids Women's Basketball team lost to Patrick Henry 68-83 Thursday on Patrick Henry CC's campus.  Virginia Western fought the Patriots to a 22-29 halftime score.  It was a balance offensive attack as four Rapids players scored over 12 points.  But later turnovers allowed Patrick Henry to stay ahead in the 2nd half.  The frontcourt of Latisha Martin and Melanie Mirzayan combined for 30 points and 13 rebounds.  Virginia Western Guard duo of Morgan Hufford and Kelly King played tough with a combined 26 points, 15 assists, and 6 steals.  The Rapids' next game is at home against conference opponent Wake Tech Community College on Saturday, November 15 at 3:00 PM.  

Women's Basketball Preview

The Rapids Women’s Basketball team finishes its final scrimmage to prepare for the start of the 2014-15 season. The team will look for leadership from their Sophomore Forward Melanie Mirzayan who lead the Rapids in 3-Point scoring, making 30 3-point baskets while shooting 73.9% from the free throw line. Sophomore Guard, and James River High grad, Morgan Hufford looks to lead the Rapids backcourt averaging 10.4 points, 3.1 steals, and 2.6 rebounds in her last season totals. Freshman Latisha Martin (Franklin County) will look to lead the Rapids defense in rebounding and block shots. Virginia Western begins its season with the Battle of I-220 down at Patrick Henry CC at 6:00 PM. The Men’s team will follow up as a double header Thursday at 8:00 PM.

Men's Basketball to face Guilford Tech

Virginia Western looks to bounce from their 65-99 loss to DII #18 Potomac State College by traveling to Guilford Tech CC on Tuesday in the Titans season opener. The Rapids will bring Damien Harris and Christopher Jones, both scoring 16 points in last Saturday’s lost. With their 16 points, both Virginia Western players rank Top 30 in the nation DIII in scoring. The Rapids will look to continue their hot streak of perimeter shooting, shooting 58.8% from the 3 Point line as a team, currently #1 in the country. Tip off time in Greensboro is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
