Roanoke, VA: The Rapids Men’s Basketball team recorded its first win as a NJCAA school, Tuesday against Southern Virginia University JV, 99-92 in the Humanities Gymnasium. Virginia Western came out shooting hot from field, making 5 FGs, 3 3PTs, and 2 FTs in the first 8 minutes of the half. The Knights hung close with four 3-point baskets from Freshman Jordin McGuigan, trailing the Rapids 31-43 at halftime. A physical game throughout continued into the 2nd half as the two teams combined for 56 total fouls. Freshman Forward Benjamen King made crucial steals and rebounds for the Virginia Western defense. The backcourt of Ben Munsey and Robert Hudson kept SVU JV at bay with attacking rim play that sent the guards to the free throw line, combining for 11 for 14 from the stripe in the 2nd half. Though the Knights pulled within 8 points of Virginia Western with 2:00 left on the clock, the Rapids knocked down six free throws to seal the victory. Sophomore Damien Harris had a high game 33 points. Virginia Western returns to conference play Saturday, January 24 as they travel to Sandhills CC, 3:00 PM schedule start.

Roanoke, VA: Both Virginia Western Basketball teams lost close games to the Thomas Nelson Gators on Friday in the Humanities Gymnasium. The Women’s team came short 73-81 in the 6:00 PM Game which saw the Rapids trade leads with Thomas Nelson, with game staying within 6 points almost the entire game. Virginia Western trailed 51-55 with 12:00 in the 2nd half, but Thomas Nelson Forwards continuously knocked down mid-range jumpers to keep the Gators ahead. Freshman Guard Kelly King scored 23 Points with 8 Rebounds, 5 Assists, and 2 Steals. The backcourt of Latisha Martin and Melanie Mirzayan combined for 36 Points and 18 rebounds, while Guard Nina Edwards pressured the Gators backcourt the entire 2nd half. Edwards had a team high 4 steals. The Rapids last home game of the fall is Sunday against conference opponent Tidewater CC at 1:00 PM
The Men’s game saw the Rapids outside shooting keeping Virginia Western within 2 possession of the Gators throughout the night. Top 15 scorer in the nation Damien Harris contributed 28 points, 5 Rebounds, and 4 Assists. Sophomore Guard Troy Lambert scored 17 Points, and Freshman Robert Hudson put in 12 points. Only down 4 with 1:30 left in the game the Rapids were unable to capitalized on Thomas Nelson’s free throw miss, losing 73-78 at the buzzer. Despite the loss, the Rapids are 2nd in the nation in 3-Point baskets made, average 10.2 per game. Virginia Western’s last home game of the fall semester is Saturday, December 12 against conference opponent Central Carolina CC at 3:00 PM.
