The Student Success Program is designed to provide a network of support for any student who fails to attain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 for any semester and for all students who fail to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 1.5 after attempting 12 semester credit hours. The program, administered through the Retention Services office, provides intrusive advising, referral services and a SDV 101 course designed to assist students in making a commitment to improve their academic standing and developing the appropriate strategies to achieve this goal.
All students who are on Academic Warning and Probation are required to have each of their instructors complete a progress report for them at three critical points throughout the semester. The forms are made available to students through Blackboard and the Retention Services website. Only the first progress report will be mailed to students at the address on file with the Admissions office. The next two forms must be either be downloaded from Blackboard or picked up from the Retention office located in Chapman Hall, room 105.
Progress reports must be returned to the Retention Services office on or before the stated due dates. Students may also have their instructor send an email to Ms. Cheryl Hilton at chilton@virginiawestern.edu The email must include current grades for the class and any concerns they might have about the student’s performance. It should be noted that it is the student's responsibility to make sure the progress report has been emailed and received by Retention Services office and not that of the instructor.
The progress report is used as a talking point between students and instructors. It is also used during early registration to determine the likelihood of students successfully completing their classes.

In order to ensure the success of program participants who are on academic probation a hold is placed on the student's account that restricts them from registering for classes on their own. Probation students MUST register for classes in the Retention Services office located in Chapman Hall, room 105. The dates for early advising/registration are two weeks prior to open enrollment. Students should schedule an appointment during these dates. Students who are advised/registered during this period generally avoid long lines and delays.
Students who are on Academic Warning do not have a hold placed on their accounts that would restrict them from registering on their own; however, they are required to submit academic progress reports on the printed due dates. Academic Warning students are strongly encouraged to speak with an academic advisor during the early advising/registration dates. Students who are advised during this period generally avoid long lines and delays.
Student Success participants are required to meet with their academic advisor prior to spring registration. During this meeting the student and advisor should work together to complete a plan of completion. The completion plan acts as a guide for academic planning and advising and also as a roadmap to success.

These individuals have a proven record of connecting students to campus resources, helping students successfully navigate the program completion process and working with students to address the issues and obstacles that hinder good academic performance.
