The Hall Associates Career and Employment Assistance Center, located in the Thomas Center, Room 202, is a counseling, assessment, and resource facility offering career-related services to Virginia Western students and alumni. Students and alumni may use the services of the Career Center to explore careers, decide on a major of study, look for employment, receive assistance in writing a resume, and learn how to prepare for a job interview. In addition to the Testing Center, Math Center, Writing Center, and the Power Hour Program, the Learning Technology Center houses two open computer labs. The main computer lab (Brown Library Room 17/18) contains 30 workstations and is open to all Virginia Western students -- except during those times when the lab has been reserved for testing or class instruction. There are also several additional computer labs on campus that are available to students. Some labs are open with no restrictions; others are available only to students in certain programs of study. All labs are closed on holidays observed by the college and when the college is closed due to inclement weather. A staff of advisors are available to assist students with admission and registration information, making decisions in career choice, choosing a curriculum of study, and other academic or personal matters. The Virginia Community College System (VCCS) automatically creates a student e-mail account for each student at a Virginia community college, including Virginia Western. This e-mail account is where important announcements and Blackboard-related e-mail will be sent and is considered the official method for communication at the VCCS. Various forms of financial aid from both public and private funds are available to eligible students. The LTC, located on the ground floor of Brown Library, is the college’s testing center and a resource center for supplementary instructional assistance for students. Tutorial assistance in the form of two drop-in centers and a one-on-one tutoring program, Power Hour, are among the services offered. A microcomputer lab is also available for students. Current Virginia Western students can check out tablet computers in Brown Library. The loan period is 2 hours, in-library use only, and a current VWCC photo ID is required. My VWCC is the central source for students to access their essential student information and handle a variety of tasks including searching and registering for classes, dropping classes, and reviewing their financial aid award. The Student Support Services program is designed for students with academic potential who would benefit from additional services. Students may be eligible for the program if they are first generation college students, meet limited income guidelines, or have a disability. In addition, students must show a need for academic support services. Services available include tutoring, career and personal counseling, assistance in obtaining financial aid, academic counseling, cultural activities, transfer assistance, and individualized assistance as needed. Students who register and pay for three or more credits are eligible to receive a VWCC Student ID Card. The Learning Technology Center (LTC), located on the ground floor of Brown Library, serves as the testing center for Virginia Western Community College. The center has a glassed-in testing area for secure testing and a computer lab for administering online tests. During hours of operation, students may take placement tests, appropriate make-up tests, and exams for distance education courses (in accordance with class policies). To help meet your educational expenses, Virginia Western Community College is pleased to participate in Nelnet's tuition payment plan. For a non-refundable fee of $25.00, Nelnet allows you to pay your tuition in monthly, interest-free payments. The earlier you enroll the more payment options you may have. Use of Virginia Western’s Wellness/Fitness Center, located on the first floor of the Student Center, is free to all registered students. Students who wish to use the facility must obtain a VWCC Student ID Card and attend a free orientation on the Center's equipment, policies, safety procedures, and guidelines.
