REACH Tutoring

Receiving tutoring services through REACH Student Support Services provides a student with many advantages, such as:

  • One-on-One support
  • Flexible hours
  • No cost, it's FREE!

When receiving tutoring services through REACH, not only will you have help with class material(s), you will also be able to take advantage of other areas of study, such as:

  • Help preparing for tests and finals.
  • Having a person to study with can aid in comprehension and retention of material.
  • Tips on study habits, organizational skills, and time management.
  • Learning these skills can be just as important as covering material for class.
  • The perspective and support of a student who knows how to be academically successful.
  • REACH tutors have successfully completed the courses in which they tutor.
  • The expertise and support provided by your tutor should help you build confidence in your own academic skills.

Who Qualifies?

Students accepted into REACH/Student Support Services may request tutors in up to two courses per semester. Applications will not be accepted after the 12th week of class for Fall or Spring semester, or after the 4th week of a 5-week summer session, or the 7th week of a 10- or 11-week summer session. Tutors are not provided for distance learning classes.

How to Request Tutoring

Any student in the REACH program may request a tutor. You must first meet with your REACH/SSS counselor. If you don't know your counselor, call our main office at 857-7286 and someone will help you make the appointment with the correct counselor. At this meeting, you will fill out a request for tutoring services and the counselor will approve the request. This is then passed to the tutor coordinator who will make the tutor assignment for your needs.

ALL students requesting a tutor will be required to attend at least one Study Skills Workshop before a tutor can be assigned. Workshops will begin the first week of classes and will be conducted every two weeks with afternoon and evening sessions. The sessions will run approximately 30-45 minutes and will focus on student responsibilities for tutoring and building lasting study habits. Attending a Study Skills Workshop does not guarantee placement with a tutor.

Students who desire occasional tutoring should utilize the Academic Link where tutoring is available on an as-needed basis in the following courses:

  • English
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Math
  • Writing
  • IST 117
  • Physics ESL

Remember you must submit a new application for tutoring services each semester. Please discuss your tutoring needs and special requests with the Tutor Coordinator rather than making your own arrangements.

Your Responsibility

  1. You are responsible for attending classes.
  2. You are responsible for preparing for your tutoring session ahead of time. This includes reading and doing your assignments in advance, reviewing your class notes, preparing questions for your tutor.
  3. You are responsible for attending all scheduled tutoring appointments (this means being on time) and when you must miss an appointment, you are responsible for contacting your tutor ahead of time. Never, just fail to show up! Twenty-four hour notice, when available, is requested.
  4. Tutoring is to take place on campus or in a public area, not in your home or the tutor's home. You may use an empty classroom, the Library, the Learning Lab, Writing Center, Math Center, Student Center, or Cafeteria.
  5. Use the tutoring time for tutoring only. Don't waste it!
  6. Sign (in ink) the contact slip the tutor will bring to the session. Your signature verifies the time spent in tutoring so the tutor can be paid. Do not sign a blank contact slip. Be certain the tutor has filled it in completely and the time recorded is correct. Sign only for the exact time spent tutoring.
  7. Remember, your tutor is not the instructor. Tutors are very helpful in getting across ideas that you may not have understood in class. They can help with suggestions on how to study the material.
  8. If problems arise during your tutoring, first attempt to work them out with your tutor. If that does not help, both you and the tutor should see the Tutor Coordinator together to try and resolve the problem.
  9. If your tutor is habitually late, please contact the Tutor Coordinator.
  10. If you have any questions, call the Tutor Coordinator, at 857-7286 or stop by the Student Support Services office, Student Center 102.

If you fail to show for any two (2) tutoring meetings, you will have your tutoring privileges revoked. A "no show" is defined as failure to notify your tutor prior to the scheduled tutoring session. Tutors are required to report no shows, so be sure to let them know ahead of time if you cannot make an appointment. Exchange phone numbers with your tutor(s) ahead of time. Excessive cancellations can also result in the revoking of tutoring privileges.

How to Prepare for Tutoring

In order to maximize the benefits of tutoring, there are a few basic steps students should take before attending tutoring sessions.

  • Attend all class meetings. Attending class provides exposure to course material. Your tutor cannot help you if you are not familiar with the material your instructor is covering. Tutors are not instructors!
  • Know class assignments and teacher instructions. Knowing assignments and instructions gives you an idea of what you should be working on. Your tutor will be better able to help and time will not be wasted determining on what you should work.
  • Have assignments completed and material studied before tutoring sessions. This includes reading text, reviewing class notes, and preparing questions for your tutor. You will make the most of your time and your tutor's time if you have prepared in advance.
  • Bring appropriate materials (book, paper, handouts, calculator, etc.) to tutoring sessions. Before your tutoring session, make sure you have everything you will need to cover the material with which you are seeking help.

Students who are most prepared for tutoring sessions will realize the greatest benefits of the service, and most will find they also become better students. Ultimately, success depends not on your tutor or your instructor, but on you.
