Writing Center

The Writing Center is an on-campus tutorial center for Virginia Western students who want to work individually with a tutor. Tutors provide each student with individual assistance in all stages of the writing process—from invention strategies to critiquing a rough draft or finished text. Writing Center activities are not limited to students enrolled in English classes. Any Virginia Western student who has a writing assignment may seek assistance from the personnel who work in the Writing Center. Completion of a form for services is required. The Writing Center operates on a walk-in basis.

Students may receive free tutoring for Virginia Western classes in which they are currently enrolled. The Virginia Western student community includes those in face-to-face classes, distance learning classes, dual-enrollment classes, and workforce development classes. The Center also serves students currently enrolled in Radford 2+2 programs, Old Dominion students and the University of Richmond students on the VWCC campus. Exceptions may occur, and tutoring may not be available if tutors are not familiar with course materials in these four-year programs. However, Virginia Western students are served first.

Writing Center Procedures

The Writing Center's goal is to make students better writers not to turn out better pieces of writing.

  • Once each semester, every student who utilizes the services of the Writing Center must fill out a Student Assessment Form.
  • Before each visit to the Writing Center, students must sign in on the book located on the podium. The information should be legible and complete.
  • Students need to know their instructor's name, the class, and the nature of the assignment. Bringing the textbook, any documentation, and pertinent handouts will facilitate the tutoring session.
  • Tutors will work with students in 30 – 45 minute sessions.
  • During each visit, a tutor will address a student's main concern about his or her paper.
  • Rough drafts must be legible. If they are not, students will be asked to type them before they receive assistance.
  • The Writing Center sends instructors a listing of the students who have utilized the Writing Center.
  • Both students and staff members are entitled to polite and courteous treatment.

Bring the following with you for a drop-in visit:

  • Textbook for the assignment.
  • Copies of any outside sources incorporated in the paper.
  • Instructor's instructions for the assignment.
  • Any progress that has been made toward the assignment.
  • Rough Drafts must be legible. If they are not, students will be asked to type them before they receive assistance.
