Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under a statewide system of community colleges. The college operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Board. It derives its charter from the General Assembly of Virginia through the Community College Act of 1966. The college is financed primarily by state funds; however, local governments and the Educational Foundation also provide support. The college's colors are colonial blue and white. The college's athletic team name is the Blue Stars.
