Graduation

We are proud of your accomplishments. Attaining a degree or certificate took much persistence and dedication. We are glad you have achieved your academic and career goals.

In order to successfully graduate and receive an Associates Degree, Certificate, or Career Studies Certificate at Virginia Western, a student must complete the following established graduation requirements:

  • Fulfill all of the course and credit hour requirements of the degree curriculum with at least 25 percent of the total semester hours acquired at Virginia Western;
  • Earn a grade point average of at least 2.0 in all studies attempted that are applicable toward graduation in their curricula;
  • File an application for graduation with his/her advisor by the established deadline;
  • Submit the graduation fee to the VWCC Cashier's Office;
  • Resolve all financial obligations to the college and return all library and college materials.

At the end of the semester, the appropriate college official will determine if the graduation applicant has met all the above criteria and is eligible for graduation.

*Virginia Western reserves the right to publicize the achievements of our graduates in local newspapers and publications.

Catalog Year For Graduation

The catalog year to be used to determine graduation requirements is the one in effect at the time of the student's entry into the college, or any catalog thereafter, as long as the student has maintained continuous enrollment.  In cases where the student does not maintain continuous enrollment (i.e. nonenrolled for two or more consecutive semesters, excluding the summer semester), graduation requirements will be determined by the catalog in effect at the time of their re-entry into the curriculum, or any catalog thereafter, as long as enrollment remains continuous.

The catalog to be used in certifying graduation shall not have been in effect more than five years.

Graduation Notes

Students may be eligible to graduate with multiple degrees and certificates if the content of the curricula differ from one another by at least 25%.  Specific curriculum conflicts can be found on the "Obtaining Multiple Degrees " in the left-hand menu.   Please contact the appropriate Division Dean or the Registrar with questions regarding the awarding of multiple degrees.

Students are not eligible to earn more than one degree in the same curriculum.  For example, students who earn degrees in a curriculum with a specialization (i.e., an A.S. in Science with a specialilzation in Health Science) will not be eligible to receive a second degree in the same curriculum (i.e., an A.S. in Science).

Students completing an Associate Degree or Certificate (excluding Career Studies) at VWCC will be eligible for honors as follows:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.2 - cum laude
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 - magna cum laude
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.8 - summa cum laude

Graduation honors are reflected on the student's academic transcript and diploma.
