Get a Good Start!

Get a good start to the academic year by taking advantage of the free resources and services available for you on each floor of the Brown Library building:

BROWN LIBRARY, GROUND FLOOR (GF) = the Testing Center, the walk-in Writing Center, and the Link Lab in room B17. Go to the ground floor to take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) for English & math, as well as make-up tests, and proctored exams for all asynchronous distance learning courses. The Writing Center provides assistance with papers for any class. The Link Lab-B17 computers are available for student use.

BROWN LIBRARY, MAIN FLOOR (1) = The Academic Link. This floor, known as the Link Learning Commons, is home to VWCC’s tutoring/academic success programs such as one-on-one and group tutoring programs and the walk-in Math Center. Computers and study rooms are available for collaborative active learning.

BROWN LIBRARY, TOP FLOOR (2) = Library Services, a “quiet floor” that is perfect for reading and quiet study. Five study rooms are available for currently-enrolled students to use. Traditional print resources (books, magazines, newspapers, and journals) are also available on this floor, along with access to library databases and other electronic resources and guides.

Free Salsa Dance Classes

The Fitness Center will be offering FREE Salsa Dance classes for all currently enrolled students, faculty & staff!

What:Salsa Dancing!

Where: Fitness Center Studio

When: Tuesdays/Thursdays from 2:30pm - 3:30pm (through October 2nd)

Constitution Day Events

September 17th, Constitution Day!

Join the Student Activities Department for an afternoon with Patrick Henry and James Madison as they argue the ratification of the US Constitution. The debate starts at 12:15 on Sept. 17th and stick around after the debate is over to take a selfie with two of the most well known Virginians in history.

We will also be providing decorative cupcakes for students during the debate and in the food court after the debate is over.

TED Talk Fridays

The Student Activities Office is hosting a weekly TED Talk Series this fall in the new Student Life Center!

Join together with other students every Friday at 1 p.m. in the S307 Conference Room to watch a selected TED Talk and discuss, brainstorm,  and have enlightening discussion. See www.ted.com for more information about TED talks.

Topics will be announced on the Student Bulletin and posted on the Virginia Western Event Calendar.

This Week's Topic: Ken Robinson "How to escape education's death valley"
Sir Ken Robinson outlines 3 principles crucial for the human mind to flourish — and how current education culture works against them. In a funny, stirring talk he tells us how to get out of the educational "death valley" we now face, and how to nurture our youngest generations with a climate of possibility.

2014-15 Student Planners now Available!

The 2014-15 Virginia Western Student Planners are now available in the Virginia Western Bookstore! 

These planners have Virginia Western's academic and financial deadlines included within the weekly calendar section. The planner also includes academic resource information and a college directory with map.

The planners are available for $7.50.

Virginia Western Free Movie Series – Fall 2014

Student Activities is excited to announce this semester's movie line-up! All faculty, staff, students and their guests are welcome to attend. All movies are free!

All films will be shown in Whitman Theater (First Floor of Business Science).

Wednesday October 1: A Most Wanted Man

2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

A Chechen Muslim illegally immigrates to Hamburg, where he gets caught in the international war on terror. Starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams and Willem Defoe. Run time: 2 hr 2 min. Rated: R. Drama.

Friday, October 10: Deliver Us from Evil

2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

NY police officer Ralph Sarchie investigates a series of crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest, schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the possessions that are terrorizing their city. Run time: 1 hr 58 min. Rated: R. Horror.

Friday, October 24: Guardians of the Galaxy

2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

From Marvel Comics. Light years from Earth, 26 years after being abducted, Peter Quill finds himself the prime target of a manhunt after discovering an orb wanted by Ronan the Accuser. Run time: 2 hr 2 min. Rated: PG-13. Sci-Fi.

Boots2Books 5K Run – This weekend!

Want to help support a great cause? Sign up today to volunteer to help with Boots2Books 5K Run to benefit the Veterans Assistance Fund, hosted by the Virginia Western Armed Forces Student Association. Saturday, August 30, 2014 beginning at 9 a.m. Race starts at Virginia Western campus. Runners will receive a free t-shirt! Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt!

Students must have at least 12 credits and a valid physical to participate during the season.

Smoking Areas

The College’s Clean Air Policy currently prohibits smoking in all areas of the south campus except in the designated shelter located adjacent to Humanities in Lot 1E.  The South Campus is described as any area between Colonial Avenue and State Route 220.  This includes Webber, Chapman, Craig and Duncan Halls the Natural Science Center, Arboretum, Greenhouse, Humanities Building and the Thomas Center.  This also includes all parking lots, sidewalks and common areas.

 Smoking on the North side of campus is limited to outside areas that are at least 25 feet from any building entrance.

The discarding of cigarette butts on the ground as litter on campus may subject the person to a criminal fine for littering.
