The Writing Center — not just for English papers!

If writing a paper or papers is a requirement in your classes -- regardless of the subject -- the Writing Center consultants are available to assist you. To protect your academic integrity, Writing Center consultants won't "fix" your paper. They will, however, help you to identify areas that need work and to choose the appropriate tools and strategies to fix your own papers. You can bring your papers to the Writing Center (located on the ground floor of Brown Library), and a consultant will work with you on a first come, first served basis. If you're taking a distance class or can't get to the Writing Center for any other reason, you can submit your papers electronically to the Online Writing Center. The Writing Center is open Mon-Thurs. 8 a.m.-7 p.m. and Fri. 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Online submissions have a two-business-day turnaround time but are often returned sooner. For more information about how the Writing Center can help you, contact Nancy Francisco at 857-6185 or email writingcenter@virginiawestern.edu.

Smoking Areas

The College’s Clean Air Policy currently prohibits smoking in all areas of the south campus except in the designated shelter located adjacent to Humanities in Lot 1E.  The South Campus is described as any area between Colonial Avenue and State Route 220.  This includes Webber, Chapman, Craig and Duncan Halls the Natural Science Center, Arboretum, Greenhouse, Humanities Building and the Thomas Center.  This also includes all parking lots, sidewalks and common areas.

Smoking on the North side of campus is limited to outside areas that are at least 25 feet from any building entrance.

The discarding of cigarette butts on the ground as litter on campus may subject the person to a criminal fine for littering.
