Flags for the Fallen

The Armed Forces Student Association will be planting a flag garden in the Arboretum in honor of Remembrance Day.  One flag will be planted for each soldier that has been killed in theater since 9/11.  This will be a fund and awareness-raising event.  $1 will plant 1 flag.  Proceeds will be donated to Bentley Conrad, 1-year-old son of Sgt. TJ Conrad.

Sgt. Conrad was killed in Afghanistan during a demonstration over the burning of Qurans earlier this year.   His wife Holly moved to the Roanoke area so Bentley would grow up with his father’s family.  We want to show them that we have not forgotten the sacrifices they have all made for our country.

Donations are being accepted on an on-going basis.  There is a collection jar in the financial aid office, and more will be popping up around campus.  We are planning to have all the flags planted during the entire month of November.

Donations may be made in honor or memory of any soldier, from any conflict.  These particular donations will be recognized on a memorial wall in Chapman Hall, also during November.

For more information, please contact Michele Hilts at 857-7395 or mhilts@virginiawestern.edu.

Faculty Book Published

Our very own James Moser, an Assistant Professor of Religion, has published his first book entitled, "Not Having to Apologize for Apologetics." This book is a concise guide to the world of Modern Apologetics ideal for casual reading, small group studies, or a college classroom, given its multiple examples and references to apologists of the past and present such as C.S. Lewis, Alister McGrath, and others. Mr. Moser will be using this book as the main text for REL 255: Apologetics, this coming spring, but it's available right now from him (in Duncan 215) at a discounted cost of $10.00. For more information feel free to visit his website at http://jamoserofva.weebly.com/news.html.
