Save the Date – September 18th

Please save the date and join President Robert H. Sandel and the Educational Foundation for a major announcement at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 18 in Whitman Theater.

The pending announcement involves exciting details about a partnership with the Horace G. Fralin Charitable Trust to provide greater access to higher education for local students. The investment in Virginia Western not only provides financial support for our students, but also positively impacts economic development in the Roanoke region.

In addition to Dr. Sandel, speakers will include Virginia Community College System Chancellor Glenn DuBois, Heywood Fralin and Educational Foundation Board of Directors President Ed Hall.

In preparation for the major announcement, please note that parking will be reserved for special guests in Lot 5, and for members of the Educational Foundation Board of Directors in Lot 1. Event attendees will park in Lot 7 and be directed through Webber Hall, across the walking bridge and to Whitman Theater.

Share details of this wonderful event with others so that we can ensure a great Virginia Western welcome for these honored guests!

FLAGS FOR THE FALLEN

The Armed Forces Student Association will be planting a flag garden in the Arboretum in honor of Remembrance Day.  One flag will be planted for each soldier that has been killed in theater since 9/11.  This will be a fund and awareness-raising event.  $1 will plant 1 flag.  Proceeds will be donated to Bentley Conrad, 1-year-old son of Sgt. TJ Conrad.

Sgt. Conrad was killed in Afghanistan during a demonstration over the burning of Qurans earlier this year.   His wife Holly moved to the Roanoke area so Bentley would grow up with his father’s family.  We want to show them that we have not forgotten the sacrifices they have all made for our country.

The official kick-off will be at the Warm Welcome.  Additional donations will be accepted in the financial aid office, and at various locations around campus during September and October.  We are hoping to have all the flags planted for the entire month of November.   Please let one of us know if you wish to make a donation in honor or memory of a particular soldier.
