“Hands-on Minds-on”: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Understanding and Preventing Societal Violence
In summer 2012, Virginia Tech will offer a unique interdisciplinary NSF funded REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program specifically designed for students from Virginia community colleges and 4 year institutions around the country. The program brings scholars together from the colleges of Engineering, Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, and Science to study the topic of societal violence. Students will be paid $4,500 stipend, travel and free housing (with 3 meals per day included!) on our campus for 10 weeks from May 21 to July 27.

Women’s and Men’s Basketball Open Gyms will be cancelled for Friday March 16 due to an event in the gym. They will resume the following Friday March 23rd at 3:30 and 4:45 PM.

Goodwill Donation Drive, Boxes will be located around campus 3/14 to 3/23. The Goodwill truck will be here on campus March 14, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. if you would like a receipt. Goodwill is giving the college vouchers for donations received. The vouchers will be given to students to shop at Goodwill.

Virginia Tech College of Engineering Open House
Interested in transferring to Virginia Tech’s Engineering program? Check out the message below regarding an Open House for the Virginia Tech College of Engineering.
The College of Engineering will be having their Open House on April 2, 2012 in Squires Student Center. The Open House will include opportunities for students to attend various presentations and lab tours along with visiting numerous booths regarding specific programs. Details can be found at http://www.eng.vt.edu/students/open_house. There is no cost to attend; however, students do need to pre-register by March 30, 2012.

Stop by the Virginia Western Volunteer Center, located in the Student Activities office, room S204. The Volunteer Coordinator will be in the office on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., if not there just put your name and email on the Volunteer Information Sign-Up Sheet.
Cirque Du Soleil’s Quidam
Cirque Du Soleil's Quidam traveling show is coming to Roanoke Civic Center from March 28th to April 1st. In preparation for the shows they will be stopping on campus on Tuesday, March 20th, noon to 3 p.m. for a promotional tour. Stop by their bus, you won't be able to miss it, in parking lot 7!
At each tour stop temporary canopies, video monitors and flags/ signage will be set up in front of the bus. Fans will take part in many interactive activities including:
- Watch Quidam sizzle reels and behind the scenes videos
- Souvenir photos with a Quidam theme using green screen technology
- Opportunity to win Quidam show tickets and prizes
- Receive Quidam branded popcorn bags and postcards
All fans are welcome to experience the tour and all activities are free to the public.
SCHEDULED SYSTEM OUTAGE
There will be an outage of the Student Information System (SIS), the college on-line application, and the Human Resource Management System (HRMS) systems from Friday, March 23 at 6 a.m. through Monday, March 26 at 7 a.m. The Virginia Community College System (VCCS) will be upgrading these systems during this time period. During this time, students will not be able to apply on-line to the college or access the VCCS SIS: Student Information System. Students wanting to apply or needing to add or drop a class will need to come in person to the Admissions Office located in Chapman Hall. Blackboard, My VWCC, Gmail, and the Wizard will continue to be available. We appreciate your cooperation and patience during this scheduled outage.
Community Agency Fair
Join the Human Services students as they present a Community Agency Fair on Friday, March 16th, noon - 2 p.m. Students will be presenting information about community agencies where they have served internships during the semester.
