Today's TED Talk: Lisa Harouni: A primer on 3D printing. 2012 may be the year of 3D printing, when this three-decade-old technology finally becomes accessible and even commonplace. Lisa Harouni gives a useful introduction to this fascinating way of making things -- including intricate objects once impossible to create.

Mummies! Trip to VMFA exhibit in Richmond


 

Mummies! Visit the special exhibit at Richmond's Virginia Museum of Fine Arts!

Friday, February 24

Departing VWCC at 8 a.m. / Return approx. 9 p.m.

 

The exhibit features more than 100 objects from the internationally known Egyptian collection of the British Museum. The exhibit also includes an introductory 3-D film.

Trip includes transportation on a charter bus and ticket to museum and exhibit. Participants must bring money for meals. $10 deposit required (returned upon arrival at event, day of trip). Only currently enrolled VWCC students, faculty or staff may attend.

Radford University Onsite Admissions!

Radford University will be on campus in the Student Center, Tuesday, February 21st for On-Site Admissions. This is a great opportunity to get an early admissions decision! Schedule an appointment in the Advising Office in Chapman Hall, room 105. The deadline for scheduling an appointment and turning in all application materials is Thursday, February 9th. Appointments will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis, so schedule early!

To sign up for an appointment with an RU Admissions Representative, you must do the following:

1. Complete an online application (https://www.applyweb.com/apply/runet/menu.html ) and pay application fee by February 9th.
2. Submit the following documents to the Advising Office:
• Official college transcripts – must be submitted to Radford prior to making your appointment. This includes dual enrollment work.
• Official high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores- Only need HS transcript and test scores if you have completed less than 24 credit hours and/or have not completed a college level math course.
• Prepare time lapse statement if there is a gap of time after high school and/or between college attendance that needs to be accounted for.

Preparation for Employment Day

Are you employment ready? If not, now is the time to start getting ready. 

The Hall Career Center will be having a Preparation for Employment Day on Friday, February 3, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. A resume workshop will be available to help with resume preparation and review. A resume is the first impression to an employer; make it a good one. Employers will be on campus to critique resumes and conduct mock interviews. Attendees will have an opportunity to attend a seminar on job searching and/or interviewing. Pre-registration is required, stop by the Hall Career Center, Student Center, room S202, by Tuesday, January 31 at noon to attend. This event does qualify for an Hall Career Center passport stamp.

Career Dinner - Wednesday, February 8, 5pm-7pm at Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Deadline to register is February 1. Employers present will be: Coca-Cola Bottling Company, WSLS, BB&T, Lewis-Gale, Neathawk, Dubuque & Packett, Novozymes, Western Virginia Regional Jail, and UnitedHealthCare.  Transportation is usually provided from the college to the site. Space is Limited. You MUST come to the Hall Career Center, Student Center, room S202, to register.

Scholarship Opportunities

Be sure to check back in January many of the scholarships will open for applications. Pay close attention to the Valley Proteins Fellowships opportunities. Ten fellowships will be awarded for the 2012-2013 academic year based on strong academic records, leadership potential and commitment to community service. The deadline to apply is April 2, 2012.

In addition to receiving up to $5,000 for tuition, books, fees, and supplies, the program provides the Fellows with opportunities to share in cultural and educational experiences and meet with successful business and government leaders from across the commonwealth. Fellows will also receive a $3,000 summer stipend. In addition to receiving a scholarship valued at approximately $10,000, the Fellows will receive support and inspiration from each other to continue pursuing their educational goals and serving their community—priceless!
