Are you an international student who’s interested in sharing some stories and/or photos of your home country? From the U.S. but interested in learning more about where other Virginia Western students are from? Come take part in Cultural Conversations on Wednesday, November 16th, from 1pm-3pm, in our Student Center (campus map).
We’d love to have you participate! You can do this by speaking and sharing your story as a refugee/immigrant or maybe talking about the differences between your home and Roanoke; you could also do a slideshow with photos of your home, perhaps with some details about where you’re from and what the situation was like there. If you’re more creatively-inclined, perhaps you might prefer to tell your tale through song or a poem or spoken work piece. We’d love to have some art as well, if anyone is so inclined. Co-sponsored by Student Activities and Brown Library, Cultural Conversations is being held in support of the Roanoke Valley Reads program, which has chosen Outcasts United:An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference, as its 2011 book. This book recounts some of the soccer team’s journeys from their homes to the U.S. and their struggles to adjust to life as resettled refugees.
