Virginia Western accepting applications for CCAP until the end of February

Interested applicants for Virginia Western Community College’s Community College Access Program (CCAP) are reminded that they must submit completed applications by Feb. 28, 2014. Students can access the 2014 CCAP application and locality checklists online at: http://www.virginiawestern.edu/ccap/apply.php.

CCAP is a series of public/private partnerships that allows graduating high school seniors from the localities of Botetourt, Craig, Franklin or Roanoke Counties or the Cities of Roanoke or Salem to attend Virginia Western for two years tuition-free. CCAP is also available to home-schooled students in the Franklin County service area.

Participants in CCAP must enter Virginia Western with and maintain a 2.5 or 2.0 GPA, as defined per locality, maintain full-time enrollment, and complete four hours of service learning per semester. CCAP supports as many students as possible based on financial need and available funds. Applicants must have attended the high school in, and have been a resident of, the participating locality in which they are applying for at least two years prior to graduation.

Blackboard and Google Apps for Education Upgrade

There will be a scheduled Blackboard outage May 17 - 18. During the outage, Blackboard Learn will be upgraded to Service Pack 11 and will include new features like a survey tool and the on-the-fly embedded video tool, Video Everywhere.  At the same time Google Apps for Education will also be expanded from its current set of core apps—Gmail, Docs, Calendar, etc., -- to a broad selection of new consumer apps: YouTube, Google+, Maps, Books, Picasa, etc. These new apps will provide VCCS students, faculty, and staff with access to an even more powerful suite of teaching, learning, social, and communication tools that can be used both inside and outside of the classroom.

However, there are some crucial steps that all students, faculty, and staff need to take to successfully access any Google Apps, including Gmail, after the upgrade. These steps are easy to accomplish and will only be required once.

  • First, after the scheduled outage (May 17th-18th) everyone must click through and agree to a new consumer Terms of Service (TOS) when you next login. No Google Apps can be accessed until users agree to these new TOS. To see these TOS, click here: http://www.email.vccs.edu/terms-of-service.
  • Second, when setting up a profile in Google Plus (G+), a Facebook-like social networking service included in the upgrade,  it is especially important that you enter  a correct date of birth (or at least a date of birth that will make you 13 years old or older). If you enter a date of birth indicating you are younger than 13, you will be permanently locked out of all Google services. This cannot be undone without significant effort and additional costs.

More information about VCCS Google Apps for Education can be found at http://www.email.vccs.edu/extra-apps (a Google Site, by the way).

Virginia Western to hold iPad classes for the public this fall

Virginia Western Community College announces an all-in-one iPad class that will teach attendees how to get the most out of their new technology. The latest Apple news, most revolutionary apps and most innovative iCloud features will be explored.

The Fall iPad Event will be held twice: from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 in Virginia Western’s Natural Science Center in Roanoke; and from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11 in the Greenfield Center Auditorium in Daleville. The cost to attend 11/11/11 event is $20 if registration is completed by Nov. 4, or $30 at the door (checks or money orders only). All attendees will be entered to win an Apple Airport Express, provided by Audiotronics. Attendees are asked to bring along their iPads, iPhones or other Apple products.

The Fall iPad Event will focus on features such as FaceTime, Airplay and iCloud that are changing the ways in which people are working, learning and playing.
